DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 68 (Phase Equilibriums, Chemical Equilibriums, and Solutions) Section cross-reference(s): 78, 73 The existence of Se2+, Se63+, Se4+, Se123+, etc. type cations with odd electrons was ruled out since both the green (410 intense, 330 nm weak; .epsilon.max. 2080, 170) and yellow (295 intense, 470 weak, 685 nm broad; .epsilon.max. 895, 260, 280) are dimagnetic. Possible reactions are: 4Se + 4HSO3Cl .fwdarw. Se42+ (yellow) + 2SO3Cl- + H2SO4 + 2HCl + SO2; 8Se + 4HSO3Cl .fwdarw. Se82+ (green) + 2SO3Cl- + H2SO4 + 2HCl + SO2. The green Se8(SO3Cl)2 and yellow Se4(SO3Cl)2 solids were isolated and their IR spectra detd. Both compds. redissolve in HSO3Cl to give highly conducting solns.

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 68 (Phase Equilibriums, Chemical Equilibriums, and Solutions) Conductometric studies of various solutes in HSO3Cl reveal that HB(HSO4)4 and HAs(HSO4) behave as acids, whereas solutes like H2SeO4, MeSO3H, and HPO2F2 behave as bases and CF3COOH, CCl3COOH, and HSO3F behave as non-electrolytes in this solvent system. Further, various N bases are found to behave as strong bases in HSO3Cl.
