DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 4 (Toxicology) The redox potential of cigaret smoke is measured puff by puff electrometrically in a specially designed app. The smoke is shown to have reducing activity which increases with puff number. Smoke constituents, esp. quinones, which contribute to or are affected by the reducing activity, are examd. A method is described for the isolation, identification, and quantitation of quinones in smoke, leaf, and pyrolyzates. It uses solvent partition, column chromatog., gas chromatog.-mass spectrometry techniques, and 9,10-anthraquinone-9-14C as internal std. (80-90% recovery). 2,3,6-Trimethyl-1,4-naphthoquinone (I) [20490-42-0] is the major quinone present in the smoke (220 .mu.g/cigaret). 9,10-Anthraquinone [84-65-1] (88 .mu.g), 2-methyl-9,10-anthraquinone [84-54-8] (190 .mu.g), other naphthoquinones, and smaller amts. of 1,4-benzoquinones are also present. In tobacco leaf, 2-methyl-9,10-anthraquinone (36 ppm) is the major quinone. Transfer from the leaf rather than pyrolytic formation appears to be a principal route by which quinones enter the smoke stream.
