DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 36 (Plastics Manufacture and Processing) The photodegrdn. of poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate) (I) [24968-11-4] films was examd. by absorption and emission spectroscopy by flash photolysis techniques to establish the mechanism of photodeterioration. A comparison of the emission spectra with that of a model compd., di-Me 2,6-naphthalate (II) [840-65-3] showed that the chromophoric species responsible for light absorption in the near UV region was the unit structure of the polymer itself. A flash photolysis study of II indicated that the major primary process in the photodeterioration of I involves scission by decarboxylation at the naphthyl-carbon bond, probably resulting in the formation of naphthalenic chain ends with little extended conjugation.
