General Description

10H-phenothiazine 5,5-dioxide, also known as phenothiazine dioxide, is a chemical compound with the molecular formula C12H9NSO2. It is a yellow crystalline powder with a melting point of 242-246°C. 10H-phenothiazine 5,5-dioxide is commonly used as a precursor for the synthesis of various pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. It is also used as a photo-initiator in the production of dental materials and in the synthesis of fluorescent dyes. Additionally, it has some potential applications in organic electronic devices. However, 10H-phenothiazine 5,5-dioxide is known to be a skin and eye irritant and may cause respiratory irritation if inhaled, so proper safety precautions should be taken when handling this compound.

Donor-acceptor type high triplet energy host materials were derived from a phenothiazine dioxide based electron transport moiety and a carbazole based hole transport moiety. Three phenothiazine dioxide type materials, 10-(3,5-di(9H-carbazol-9-yl)phenyl)-10H-phenothiazine 5,5-dioxide (DCzPO), 10-(3′,5′-di(9H-carbazol-9-yl)-[1,1′-biphenyl]-3-yl)-10H-phenothiazine 5,5-dioxide (DCzmPPO), and 10-(3′,5′-di(9H-carbazol-9-yl)-[1,1′-biphenyl]-4-yl)-10H-phenothiazine 5,5-dioxide (DCzpPPO), could transport both holes and electrons effectively and showed high triplet energy for use in blue phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes. Device optimization of the DCzPO, DCzmPPO, and DCzpPPO host based blue devices could realize high EQE of 24.3%.

Aggregated-induced emission phenothiazine probe for selective ratiometric response of hypochlorite over other reactive oxygen species

In order to perform a ratiometric fluorescent sensor to recognize hypochlorite over other reaction oxidation species, a simple phenothiazine probe (QC1) with double dioxaborolane moieties was designed and synthesized. QC1 provided blue emission in aqueous and solid state. Double dioxaborolane and quaternary phosphonium salt was introduced into the molecule to prevent aggregation. The sulphur atom at the centre of phenothiazine was to respond to the hypochlorite at room temperature over other ROS because of its stronger oxidized ability. QC1 gave good linear fitting in the ratiometric mode under both absorption and emission titration experiments. Moreover, QC1 showed lower detection limited that reached 0.95 μM in absorption titration and 0.41 μM in fluorescent titration process.

The identification of chemoselective oxidation process en route to fine chemicals and specialty chemicals is a long-standing pursuit in chemical synthesis. A vertically structured, cobalt single atom-intercalated molybdenum disulfide catalyst (Co1-in-MoS2) is developed for the chemoselective transformation of sulfides to sulfone derivatives. The single-atom encapsulation alters the electron structure of catalyst owing to confinement effect and strong metal–substrate interaction, thus enhancing adsorption of sulfides and chemoselective oxidation at the edge sites of MoS2 to achieve excellent yields of up to 99% for 34 examples. The synthetic scopes can be extended to sulfide-bearing alkenes, alkynes, aldehydes, ketones, boronic esters, and amines derivatives as a toolbox for the synthesis of high-value, multifunctional sulfones and late-stage functionalization of pharmaceuticals, e.g., Tamiflu. The synthetic utility of cobalt single atom-intercalated MoS2, together with its reusability, scalability, and simplified purification process, renders it promising for industrial productions.
