The compound cis-Pd(NH3)2Br2 was obtained by a two-stage procedure that ensures the formation of an almost one-phase product. The thermal stability and the processes preceding the thermal decomposition of the product were studied by thermal analysis and high-temperature X-ray powder diffraction. Decomposition in air affords Pd and PdO as the final products. A powder X-ray diffraction study was carried out. The unit cell is orthorhombic with: a = 13.3161(6) ?, b = 12.7223(6) ?, c = 7.0588(2) ?, space group Pbca, Z = 8, V = 1195.84 ?3; Dx = 3.337 g/cm3. The atomic positions were found from the Patterson synthesis and finally refined by the Rietveld method: Rp* = 9.95%, Rwp = 7.51%, Rexp = 4.83%, RB = 3.67%, S = 1.55. The crystal lattice belongs to the molecular type. The cis-Pd(NH3)2Br2 entities are nearly planar and slightly differ in their shape from a regular trapezium. The molecules are packed in columns running along the z axis; each molecule is turned 180° with respect to the lower molecule.
