Reactions of triphenyl(phenylethynyl)phosphonium bromide with dialkyl phosphonates and trialkyl phosphites yield betaines with a negative charge on the oxygen and positive phosphonium center. The betaine derived from dimethyl phosphonate is decomposed by boiling water into triphenylphosphine oxide and 2-methoxy-1-phenylvinylphosphinic acid. A reaction scheme is proposed, which includes nucleophilic substitution followed by redox process.
