2-Formyl-2-arylhydrazonoethanenitriles 6b-d where prepared via reacting enaminonitrile 2b,c with aromatic diazonium salts. These reacted with phenylhydrazine to yield bis hydrazones that were converted to arylazopyrazoles via a novel Vilsmeier-Haack reaction type. Reaction of 6c with hydroxylamine afforded oxime that could be successfully cyclised into arylazoisoxazole. Reaction of 6c with hydrazine hydrate to yield arylazoaminopyrazole that proved to be excellent precursors for synthesis functional substituted pyrazolopyrimidines.

A range of molecular modelling techniques has been applied to predict optimized geometrical conformations and energies of the ring-closed oxazine form and ring-opened merocyanine forms of three azospirooxazines. A comparison of the relative stabilities of the possible isomers of the merocyanines was carried out by applying molecular mechanics (augmented MM2), while the prediction of the potential for photochromic behaviour was made by comparison of the heats of formation calculated by AM1. Synthetic routes were explored and as a result two azospirooxazines were isolated, one of which showed interesting and unusual photochromic behaviour. The instability of this compound towards purification by chromatography was investigated. The decomposition product was isolated and characterized with the aid of single crystal x-ray crystallography. The correlation between predicted and observed photochromic behaviour is discussed.

A series of non-sulfur, fluorescent sensors (S6, S6-1 or S6-2) for mercury ions bearing 1H-imidazo[4,5-b]phenazine derivatives have been designed and synthesized. Among these sensors, a furan group into the sensor S6 molecule was as the functional group, compound S6-1 containing the 5-(4-Nitrophenyl)-2-furan group was synthesized, and in order to establish the furan group's contribution to the sensor's fluorescent sensing abilities, compound S6-2, which without containing the furan group was also synthesized. S6 showed excellent fluorescent specific selectivity and high sensitivity for Hg2+ in aqueous solution. The detection limit of the sensor towards Hg2+ is 1.6×10-7 M, and other ions, including Fe3+, Ca 2+, Cu2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cd 2+, Pb2+, Zn2+, Cr3+, and Mg 2+ had nearly no influence on the probing behavior. Notably, this sensor serves as a recyclable component in sensing materials. The test strips based on S6 were fabricated, which could act as a convenient and efficient Hg2+ test kits.

Novel yellow azo dyes were synthesized by diazotization of aromatic amines followed by coupling with 2-morpholin-4-yl-1,3-thiazol-4(5H)-one and fully characterized. The geometries of the synthesized dyes for azo and hydrazone tautomeric forms were optimized using B3LYP, CAM-B3LYP and M06 functional and 6-31G(d) and 6-311++G (d,p) basis sets, also their electronic excitation properties were evaluated using density functional theory. The optimized geometries reveal that the hydrazone for is more stable than the azo form. Photophysical properties of the synthesized dyes were evaluated by UV-Visible spectroscopy and compared with computed vertical excitation obtained from TDDFT. The results clearly illustrate existence of dye 8a, 8b and 8c in hydrazone tautomeric form, while 8d exist in both azo as well as hydrazone form. Thermal stabilities were estimated by using thermo gravimetric analysis, and results revels that the synthesized dyes have good thermal stability.

In-situ coupling of diazonium salts to a range of tertiary anilines, phenols and naphthols afforded the requisite azo dyes in good yield, using standard experimental procedures.

- Waste-free chemistry of diazonium salts and benign separation of coupling products in solid salt reactions

Gas-solid and solid-solid techniques allow for waste-free and quantitative syntheses in the chemistry of diazonium salts. Five techniques for diazotations with the reactive gases NO2, NO and NOCl are studied. Two types are mechanistically investigated with atomic force microscopy (AFM) and are interpreted on the basis of known crystal packings. The same principles apply to the cascade reactions that had been derived from one-step reactions. Solid diazonium salts couple quantitatively with solid diphenylamine and anilines to give the triazenes. Azo couplings are achieved with quantitative yields by cautious co-grinding of solid diazonium salts with β-naphthol and C-H acidic heterocycles, such as barbituric acids or pyrazolinones. Solid diazonium salts may be more easily applied in a stoichiometric ratio for couplings in solution. Co-grinding of solid diazonium salts with KI gives quantitative yields of various solid aryl iodides. The unavoidable coupling products in salt reactions are completely separated from the insoluble products in a highly benign manner. The solid-state reactions compare favourably with similar solution reactions that produce much waste. The structures of the products are elucidated with IR and NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry, while the tautomeric properties of the compounds are studied with density functional calculations at the B3LYP/6-31G* and BLYP/6-31G** levels.
