- Harnessing Alkyl Amines as Electrophiles for Nickel-Catalyzed Cross Couplings via C-N Bond Activation
-
We developed a strategy to harness alkyl amines as alkylating agents via C-N bond activation. This Suzuki-Miyaura cross coupling of alkylpyridinium salts, readily formed from primary amines, is the first example of a metal-catalyzed cross coupling via C-N bond activation of an amine with an unactivated alkyl group. This reaction enjoys broad scope and functional group tolerance. Primary and secondary alkyl groups can be installed. Preliminary studies suggest a NiI/NiIII catalytic cycle.

- Suzuki-miyaura cross-coupling reactions of unactivated alkyl halides catalyzed by a nickel pincer complex
-
A nickel(II) pincer complex, [(MeN2N)Ni-Cl], was used to catalyze alkyl-alkyl and alkyl-aryl Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reactions of unactivated alkyl halides. The coupling of 9-alkyl-9-borabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane and 9-phenyl-9-borabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane reagents with alkyl halides was achieved in modest to good yields. The reactions tolerated a variety of useful functional groups including ester, ether, furan, thioether, acetal, and Boc groups. Georg Thieme Verlag Stuttgart, New York.

- Discovery of a novel activator of 5-lipoxygenase from an anacardic acid derived compound collection
-
Lipoxygenases (LOXs) and cyclooxygenases (COXs) metabolize poly-unsaturated fatty acids into inflammatory signaling molecules. Modulation of the activity of these enzymes may provide new approaches for therapy of inflammatory diseases. In this study, we screened novel anacardic acid derivatives as modulators of human 5-LOX and COX-2 activity. Interestingly, a novel salicylate derivative 23a was identified as a surprisingly potent activator of human 5-LOX. This compound showed both non-competitive activation towards the human 5-LOX activator adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and non-essential mixed type activation against the substrate linoleic acid, while having no effect on the conversion of the substrate arachidonic acid. The kinetic analysis demonstrated a non-essential activation of the linoleic acid conversion with a KA of 8.65 μM, αKA of 0.38 μM and a β value of 1.76. It is also of interest that a comparable derivative 23d showed a mixed type inhibition for linoleic acid conversion. These observations indicate the presence of an allosteric binding site in human 5-LOX distinct from the ATP binding site. The activatory and inhibitory behavior of 23a and 23d on the conversion of linoleic compared to arachidonic acid are rationalized by docking studies, which suggest that the activator 23a stabilizes linoleic acid binding, whereas the larger inhibitor 23d blocks the enzyme active site.

- Solution processable symmetric 4-alkylethynylbenzene end-capped anthracene derivatives
-
New candidates composed of anthracene and 4-alkylethynylbenzene end-capped oligomers for OTFTs were synthesized under Sonogashira coupling reaction conditions. All oligomers were characterized by FT-IR, mass, UV-visible, and PL emission spectrum analyses, cyclic voltammetry (CV), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR. Investigation of their physical properties showed that the oligomers had high oxidation potential and thermal stability. Thin films of DHPEAnt and DDPEAnt were characterized by spin coating them onto Si/SiO 2 to fabricate top-contact OTFTs. The devices prepared using DHPEAnt and DDPEAnt showed hole field-effect mobilities of 4.0 × 10-3 cm2/Vs and 2.0 × 10-3 cm2/Vs, respectively, for solution-processed OTFTs.

- Room-temperature discotic nematic liquid crystals
-
The use of discotic nematic liquid crystals instead of calamitic nematic liquid crystals to improve the viewing angle of a liquid crystal display device has recently been reported. Compared to the large number of calamitic molecules showing nematic phase at room temperature, the number of disk-shaped molecules showing subambient discotic nematic phase ND are rare. In this paper we present the design, synthesis, mesomorphic behaviour and structureproperty relationship of discotic nematic liquid crystals based on benzene multiyne core.

- Discotic liquid crystals of transition metal complexes, 31: Establishment of mesomorphism and thermochromism of bis[1,2-bis(4-n-alkoxyphenyl)ethane-1,2-dithiolene]nickel complexes
-
Two series of bis[1,2-bis(4-n-alkylphenyl)ethane-1,2-dithiolene]nickel, Cn-Ni (n= 1-12), and bis[1,2-bis(4-n-alkoxyphenyl)ethane-1,2-dithiolene]nickel, CnO-Ni(n = 1-12, 14, 16, 18), have been synthesized. Their mesomorphism, thermochromism, supramolecular structures and π-acceptor property have been investigated by using different scanning calorimetry, polarizing microscopy, temperature-dependent X-ray diffraction technique, electronic spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. From the X-ray diffraction and electronic spectral results, it was established that the CnO-Ni complexes for n ≤ 10 exhibit two differently colored discotic lamellar (DL) mesophases whereas none of the Cn-Ni complexes has a mesophase, and that the thermochromism (brown→green) is attributable to a slow transformation from the Ni-Ni bonded dimers to the Ni-S bonded dimers.

- Rigid amphiphiles for membrane protein manipulation
-
The two nonhomologous membrane proteins bacteriorhodopsin and bovine rhodopsin can be extracted from their native membranes by the rigid tripod amphiphile 1. Both proteins are maintained in a stable, soluble form, which is a prerequisite for crystallization. This new class of amphiphiles can be easily modified and could prove to be very useful for membrane protein manipulation.

- Synthesis and Alkali-Metal Complexing Abilities of Crown Ether Tertiary Alcohols
-
Twenty-three crown ethers with a hydroxyl and an alkyl or aryl group linked directly to the central carbon of a three-carbon bridge were synthesized in one-step reactions of glycol and bisphenol dianions with substituted 2-(chloromethyl)oxiranes.Crown ether tertiary alcohols with methyl, n-decyl, n-tetradecyl, phenyl, and p-(n-decyl)phenyl substituents and four ring sizes are prepared. The effect of substituent on Na+ and K+ complexation is assessed by the picrate extraction method for closely related tertiary crown ether alcohols with 16-crown-5 and 15-crown-5-rings.
