- TRICYCLIC COMPOUNDS AS mPGES-1 INHIBITORS
-
The present invention relates to tricyclic compounds of formula (I) or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof as mPGES-1 inhibitors. These compounds are inhibitors of the microsomal prostaglandin E synthase-1 (mPGES-1) enzyme and are therefore useful in the treatment of pain and/or inflammation from a variety of diseases or conditions, such as asthama, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, acute or chronic pain and neurodegenerative diseases. - Regioselective iodination of chlorinated aromatic compounds using silver salts
-
The iodination of chlorinated aromatic compounds using Ag 2SO4/I2, AgSbF6/I2, AgBF4/I2, and AgPF6/I2 offers access to iodoarenes that are valuable intermediates in organic synthesis. Specifically, iodination of phenols, anisoles, and anilines with a 3,5-dichloro substitution pattern preferentially yielded the ortho, para, and para iodinated product, respectively. In the case of chlorobenzene and 3-chlorotoluene, AgSbF6/I2, AgBF4/I2, and AgPF 6/I2, but not Ag2SO4/I2, selectively introduced the iodine in para position to the chlorine substituent.

STR1 The invention describes liquid crystalline compounds or formula (I), where A, D and G are independently selected from phenyl, thiophene, hydrogenated phenyl, chlorinated phenyl and fluorinated phenyl, B and E are independently selected from a single bond C= C. C C.C00, azoxy and diazo, k and m are independently selected from 1 and 0, such that m+n is 1 or 2, and R1 and R2 are independently selected from R, R0, alkynyl, thioalkyl, hydrogen, CN, NCS and SCN; provided that at least one of R1 and R2 is selected from CN, NCS and SCN and that at least one of A, D and G is phenyl; and excluding where at least one of R1 and R2 is independently selected as CN and one of A, D or G is not thiophene, and where m is 0, A, and D are phenyl, B is a single bond and only one of R1 or R2 is NCS. Also described are compounds suitable for inclusion in a device utilizing pretransitional characteristics of liquid crystalline materials in the isotropic phase, of general formula (II) where J and Y are independently selected from phenyl, thiophene, hydrogenated phenyl, chlorinated phenyl and fluorinated phenyl, X is selected from C= C. C C.COO azoxy and diazo, k is 1 or 0 and R3 and R4 are independently selected from R, RO, alkynyl, thioalkyl, hydrogen, CN, NCS and SCN; provided that at least one of R3 and R4 is selected from CN, NCS and SCN and that at least one of J and Y is phenyl.

- Electron transfer in bis-porphyrin donor-acceptor compounds with polyphenylene spacers shows a weak distance dependence
-
A series of phenylene-bridged bis-porphyrin adducts have been synthesized, containing one, two, or three phenyl bridges. Complete synthetic details are provided. For studies of photochemical electron transfer, mixed metals wre incorporated, with zinc in one porphyrin macrocycle and FeIII (bis-imidazole) in the other macrocycle. When photoexcited, an electron is transferred from Zn to FeIII. The rate of this process drops only slowly with distance: kα exp(βr), with β = 0.4 A?-1. This dependence can be predicted by a simple theory which assumes that the drop does not reflect increased distance, but rather reflects the break in conjugation which occurs at each phenyl juncture due to the biphenyl twist angle of ca. 50°. Inefficient overlap in this angle results in a rate drop of ca. 6-fold per phenyl ring, in good agreement with the observed results.

- STOICHIOMETRIC AND CATALYTIC OXIDATIVE IODINATION OF AROMATIC COMPOUNDS IN THE PRESENCE OF NITROGEN-CONTAINING OXIDIZING AGENTS IN AQUEOUS TRIFLUOROACETIC ACID
-
The conditions for oxidative monoiodination of benzene, halogenobenzenes, toluene, halogenotoluenes, and p-toluic acid in solvents based on trifluoroacetic acid were studied.Yields of the respective iodoarenes close to quantitative were obtained in systems containing 10-20 vol. percent of water in the solvent with equimolar amounts of alkali-metal metal iodides in relation to the substrate in the presence of stoichiometric (under anaerobic conditions) or catalytic (in the presence of oxygen or air) amounts of alkali-metal nitrates. The analogous reactions with nitrites can only be conducted under aerobic conditions. These iodinating systems are compared with systems based on acetic acid containing iodine and mixtures of sulfuric and nitric acids. The conditions for the iodination of toluene and for the transformations of the obtained iodotoluenes in the presence of nitrogen-containing oxidizing agents in trifluoroacetic acid solutions were studied in detail. It was shown that p-iodotoluene undergoes ipso-nitrodeiodination to a significant degree under these conditions. It is supposed that the iodinating agent in the investigated systems is trifluoroacetyl hypoiodite.Data on the assignment of the PMR spectra of the synthesized isomeric nitroiodotoluenes and chloroiodotoluenes by a simple additive method are given.
