Solvent and pH Effects of Coumarin-Terminated Monolayer on Silver Particles
Ismail, Issha Nadirah,Asri, Nurul Izzatil Aisya,Tajuddin, Hairul Anuar,Abdullah, Zanariah
, p. 777 - 785 (2015)
A coumarin-terminated self-assembled monolayer on silver particles (C-SAM) from the reduction of silver ions in the presence of compound 3 was successfully prepared by utilizing phase transfer method, and analyzed by FTIR, SEM-EDS, UV-Visible and a particle sizer. The fluorescence behavior of coumarin termini was carried out in ethanol and chloroform with emission wavelength determined at 386 nm, suggesting an interaction between the carbonyl group and the solvent media. The dispersion was then investigated in acidic and basic conditions, showing a direct proportional correlation between the emission and the pH of the aqueous. These results were consistent for interpreting hydrogen bonds, particularly between the carbonyl group with either proton of the alcohol (C=O - H-O-R) or positive species in acidic conditions (C=O - H+). The interactions were possible only when the coumarin terminal rearranged in the monolayer and the carbonyl exerted towards the solvent media, while the rest of the molecules were separated from the solvents.
Efficient two-step synthesis of 11,11′-dithiobis[1-(2-bromo-2- methylpropionyloxy)undecane], a conventional initiator for grafting polymer brushes from gold surfaces via ATRP

, p. 3000 - 3007 (2010)
11,11′-Dithiobis[1-(2-bromo-2-methylpropionyloxy)undecane], a conventional initiator for grafting polymers from gold surfaces, was synthesized in two steps from 11-mercapto-1-undecanol in 88-92% overall yield. Oxidative dimerization of 11-mercapto-1-undecanol with a catalytic amount of sodium iodide and 30% hydrogen peroxide in ethyl acetate proceeded in 96% yield. Esterification with 2-bromoisobutyryl bromide in dichloromethane was clean and almost quantitative (92% yield) with pyridine used as base, whereas triethylamine gave a messy reaction (64% yield). Alternatively, esterification with 2-bromo-2-methyl-propanoic acid in dichloromethane occurred readily under Steglich′s conditions with N,N′-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC) and a catalytic amount of dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP; 88% yield). Quantum interference effects in self-assembled asymmetric disulfide monolayers: Comparisons between experiment and ab initio/Monte Carlo theories
Cheng, Jun,Miller, Cary J.
, p. 1058 - 1062 (1997)
Electron transfer measurements between solution redox probes and a Au electrode coated with self-assembled monolayers of symmetric and asymmetric ??-hydroxyalkane disulfides are used to probe the quantum interference between hydrocarbon chains of different lengths. While ab initio theory predicts a measurable destructive interference effect between hydrocarbon chains differing in length by a single methylene unit, electron transfer rates for the ferricyanide and horse heart cytochrome c are more consistent with rates estimated in the absence of the interference effect. The discrepancy between theory and experiment is discussed in light of possible interchain electronic coupling and phase segregation within the monolayers and limitations of the theoretical models.
Strong resistance of phosphorylcholine self-assembled monolayers to protein adsorption: Insights into nonfouling properties of zwitterionic materials
Chen, Shengfu,Zheng, Jie,Li, Lingyan,Jiang, Shaoyi
, p. 14473 - 14478 (2005)
In this work, we show the strong resistance of zwitterionic phosphorylcholine (PC) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) to protein adsorption and examine key factors leading to their nonfouling behavior using both experimental and molecular simulation techniques. Zwitterions with a balanced charge and minimized dipole are excellent candidates as nonfouling materials due to their strong hydration capacity via electrostatic interactions.

Sulfonic acid-functionalized gold nanoparticles: A colloid-bound catalyst for soft lithographic application on self-assembled monolayers

, p. 4279 - 4284 (2003)
In this report, we present a new lithographic approach to prepare patterned surfaces. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of the acid-labile trimethylsilyl ether (TMS-OC11H22S)2 (TMS adsorbate) was formed on gold. 5-Mercapto-2-benzimidazole sulfonic acid sodium salt (MBS-Na+) was used as a ligand for gold nanoparticles. These monolayer-protected gold colloids (MPCs) were transformed into the catalytically active H+-form by ion exchange. This colloid-bound catalyst hydrolyzed the TMS adsorbate (TMS-OC11H22S)2 both in solution and when self-assembled on gold surfaces. Microcontact printing of the active colloid-bound catalyst on the preformed TMS SAM led to the deposition of the colloid onto the SAMs. After the catalyst nanoparticles were rinsed off, a patterned surface was created as shown by AFM.
Systematic manipulation of surface chemical reaction on the nanoscale: A novel approach for constructing three-dimensional nanostructures
Wang, Xiuzhu,Zhou, Dejian,Rayment, Trevor,Abell, Chris
, p. 474 - 475 (2003)
Nanoscale patches, created by nanografting a maleimide-terminated thiol into a self-assembled monolayer, were elaborated by sequential chemical reactions. Each stage in the nanofabrication was followed by atomic force microscopy (AFM), providing a controlled approach to the fabrication of novel three-dimensional (3D) surface nanostructures.

Preferential End-to-End Assembly of Gold Nanorods by Biotin-Streptavidin Connectors
Caswell,Wilson, James N.,Bunz, Uwe H. F.,Murphy, Catherine J.
, p. 13914 - 13915 (2003)
A major challenge in nanoscience and nanotechnology is the rational assembly of nanoscale objects. Here we report that gold nanorods, aspect ratio 18, can be functionalized with a biotin disulfide, and subsequent addition of streptavidin links the rods together in an end-to-end manner much more often than expected.
