- In Situ Monitoring of RAFT Polymerization by Tetraphenylethylene-Containing Agents with Aggregation-Induced Emission Characteristics
-
A facile and efficient approach is demonstrated to visualize the polymerization in situ. A group of tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-containing dithiocarbamates were synthesized and screened as agents for reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerizations. The spatial-temporal control characteristics of photochemistry enabled the RAFT polymerizations to be ON and OFF on demand under alternating visible light irradiation. The emission of TPE is sensitive to the local viscosity change owing to its aggregation-induced emission characteristic. Quantitative information could be easily acquired by the naked eye without destroying the reaction system. Furthermore, the versatility of such a technique was well demonstrated by 12 different polymerization systems. The present approach thus demonstrated a powerful platform for understanding the controlled living radical polymerization process.

- The aggregation-induced emission of Methyl-bis-(4-triphenylvinyl-benzyl)-amine in solution with torsional and locked stacking effects
-
Herein, we designed and synthesized a compound, Di-TPE, which has the torsional, locked stacking effect in aggregation with aggregation-induced emission properties in solution. The carbon chain of Di-TPE molecule centered on the nitrogen atom acts as a linker to connect two tetraphenylethylene groups. Di-TPE has a torsional stacking effect in the aggregation state, which is very different from the face-to-face stacking mode of TPE. Under the torsional stacking effect, Di-TPE aggregates will also form intra-locked conformation, resulting in the electron cloud distribution of Di-TPE aggregates with the sandwich biscuit shape. This is completely different from TPE and has a profound effect on the spectral properties of Di-TPE. Di-TPE with aggregation-induced emission properties under torsional stacking effect may provide a beneficial help for researchers to expand the field of fluorescent molecules, luminescent devices and biological fluorescent probes.

- Aggregation-induced emission or aggregation-caused quenching? Impact of covalent bridge between tetraphenylethene and naphthalimide
-
Understanding the physical mechanisms governing aggregation-induced-emission (AIE) and aggregation-caused-quenching plays a vital role in developing functional AIE materials. In this work, tetraphenylethene (TPE, a classical AIEgen) and naphthalimide (NI, a popular fluorophore with ACQ characteristics) were connected through non-conjugated linkages and conjugated linkages. We showed that the nonconjugated-linkage of TPE to NI fragments leads to substantial PET in molecular aggregates and ACQ. In contrast, the conjugated connection between TPE and NI moieties results in the AIE phenomenon by suppressing twisted intramolecular charge transfer. This work provides an important guideline for the rational design of AIE materials.

- Full-color tunable mechanofluorochromism and excitation-dependent emissions of single-arm extended tetraphenylethylenes
-
We propose a new single-arm extension strategy on traditional tetraphenylethylene and successfully develop a new series of full-color (from ~450 nm to ~740 nm) tunable mechanofluorochromic materials. These materials exhibit efficient solid-state emission (quantum yield Φf > 10%) and high mechanofluorochromic contrast (wavelength shift from ~50 nm to ~100 nm). More importantly, we discover an unexpected excitation-dependent emission phenomenon of mechanofluorochromic materials and propose to utilize this new excitation-dependent emission behavior of materials to evaluate their mechanical-responsive performances more comprehensively. Finally, the unique feature of abundant emissions of mechanofluorochromic materials by changing the excitation light has shown application potential in dual channel anti-counterfeiting.

- Real-time monitoring of cell apoptosis and drug screening using fluorescent light-up probe with aggregation-induced emission characteristics
-
Real-time monitoring of cell apoptosis could provide valuable insights into early detection of therapy efficiency and evaluation of disease progression. In this work, we designed and synthesized a new live-cell-permeable, fluorescent light-up probe for real-time cell apoptosis imaging. The probe is comprised of a hydrophilic caspase-specific Asp-Glu-Val-Asp (DEVD) peptide and a hydrophobic tetraphenylethene (TPE) unit, a typical fluorogen with aggregation-induced emission characteristics. In aqueous solution, the probe is almost nonfluorescent but displays significant fluorescence enhancement in response to caspase-3/-7, which are activated in the apoptotic process and able to cleave the DEVD moieties. This fluorescence "turn-on" response is ascribed to aggregation of cleaved hydrophobic TPE residues, which restricts the intramolecular rotations of TPE phenyl rings and populates the radiative decay channels. The light-up nature of the probe allows real-time monitoring of caspase-3/-7 activities both in solutions and in living cells with a high signal-to-noise ratio. The probe provides a new opportunity to screen enzyme inhibitors and evaluate the apoptosis-associated drug efficacy.
