- Self-Assembled 2,3-Dicyanopyrazino Phenanthrene Aggregates as a Visible-Light Photocatalyst
-
In this study, 2,3-dicyanopyrazino phenanthrene (DCPP), a commodity chemical that can be prepared at an industrial scale, was used as a photocatalyst in lieu of Ru or Ir complexes in C-X (X = C, N, and O) bond-forming reactions under visible-light irradiation. In these reactions, [DCPP]n aggregates were formed in situ through physical π-πstacking of DCPP monomers in organic solvents. These aggregates exhibited excellent photo- and electrochemical properties, including a visible light response (430 nm), long excited-state lifetime (19.3 μs), high excited-state reduction potential (Ered([DCPP]n*/[DCPP]n·-) = +2.10 V vs SCE), and good reduction stability. The applications of [DCPP]n aggregates as a versatile visible-light photocatalyst were demonstrated in decarboxylative C-C cross-coupling, amidation, and esterification reactions.

- Sequential Organozinc Formation and Negishi Cross-Coupling of Amides Catalysed by Cobalt Salt
-
Herein, a cobalt-catalysed Negishi-type cross-coupling of amide derivatives is described. Apart from being the first example of cobalt-catalysed Negishi-type coupling of amides, the process described employs a unique, simple, and cheap catalytic system to perform both the organozinc formation and the Negishi-type coupling. Indeed, the same cobalt(II) bromide salt used to form the arylzinc species from aryl bromides is then re-used to perform the cross coupling of this resulting arylzinc with N-benzoyl glutarimides at room temperature. The main advantages of the reaction presented are its robustness and ease of use. Indeed, the reactions of organozinc formation and Negishi-type coupling are performed without precautions toward water or oxygen. (Figure presented.).

- Highly efficient synthesis of aryl ketones by PEPPSI-palladium catalyzed acylative Suzuki coupling of amides with diarylborinic acids
-
An improved acylative cross-coupling of various N-methyl-N-tosyl amides with diarylborinic acids for synthesis of aryl ketones is developed. In most cases, aryl ketones could be obtained in excellent yields by using 1 mol% 2,6-diisopropylphenylimidazolylidene and 3-chloropyridine co-supported palladium chloride as catalyst in the presence of 3 equiv. K2CO3 as base in refluxing THF. The readily prepared and cost-effective substrates, N-methyl-N-tosylamides and diarylborinic acids, and the commercially available catalyst system promise a practical and efficient access to aryl ketones.

- Pd-NHC catalysed Carbonylative Suzuki coupling reaction and its application towards the synthesis of biologically active 3-aroylquinolin-4 (1H)-one and acridone scaffolds
-
We have unfolded a convenient and mild protocol for the synthesis of diaryl ketones via Pd- NHC catalysed carbonylative Suzuki coupling reaction. Notably, this method offers advantages like no use of toxic CO gas, shorter reaction time, high yield, and broad substrate scope. Several sensitive functional groups (like-COMe, -COOMe, -F, -Cl, -Br, -NH2, -CN) are well tolerated in this reaction. In addition, we have also demonstrated a new efficient route for the synthesis of biologically active and pharmaceutically important 2-substituted 3-Aroylquinolin-4(1H)-ones and acridone scaffolds.

- A general approach to intermolecular carbonylation of arene C-H bonds to ketones through catalytic aroyl triflate formation
-
The development of metal-catalysed methods to functionalize inert C-H bonds has become a dominant research theme in the past decade as an approach to efficient synthesis. However, the incorporation of carbon monoxide into such reactions to form valuable ketones has to date proved a challenge, despite its potential as a straightforward and green alternative to Friedel-Crafts reactions. Here we describe a new approach to palladium-catalysed C-H bond functionalization in which carbon monoxide is used to drive the generation of high-energy electrophiles. This offers a method to couple the useful features of metal-catalysed C-H functionalization (stable and available reagents) and electrophilic acylations (broad scope and selectivity), and synthesize ketones simply from aryl iodides, CO and arenes. Notably, the reaction proceeds in an intermolecular fashion, without directing groups and at very low palladium-catalyst loadings. Mechanistic studies show that the reaction proceeds through the catalytic build-up of potent aroyl triflate electrophiles.

- At normal pressure fragrant ketone nickel catalytic synthesis method
-
The invention discloses a method for synthesizing diarylketone under the catalysis of nickel at normal pressure. The method comprises the steps of enabling aryl iodide, arylboronic acid and carbon monoxide to be subjected to direct cross-coupling reaction in a solvent polyethylene glycol or a water solution of polyethylene glycol under the catalysis of a nickel catalyst and the combined action of alkaline and acid at normal pressure to prepare a diarylketone compound. The method has the advantages of wide catalyst source, low price, little toxicity, reaction at normal pressure, high selectivity, no need of ligands in reaction, good activity, good functional group compatibility, wide substrate application range, wide substrate source, stable substrate, green and recyclable reaction medium and the like. The separation yield of target products is up to 93% under an optimized reaction condition.

This note describes a dimethyl dicarbonate-assisted, Pd(OAc)2/PPh3-catalyzed acylative Suzuki coupling of carboxylic acids with diarylborinic acids or tetraarylboronates for practical and efficient synthesis of sterically undemanding aryl ketones at room temperature. More than just cost-effective alternatives to aryl boronic acids, diarylborinic acids and tetraarylboronates displayed higher reactivity in the acylative Suzuki coupling. A variety of alkyl aryl ketones, including those bearing a hydroxy, bromo, or carbonyl group, could be readily obtained in modest to excellent yields.

- Palladium-Catalyzed α-Arylation of Aryl Nitromethanes

Catalytic conditions for the α-arylation of aryl nitromethanes have been discovered using parallel microscale experimentation, despite two prior reports of the lack of reactivity of these aryl nitromethane precursors. The method efficiently provides a variety of substituted, isolable diaryl nitromethanes. In addition, it is possible to sequentially append two different aryl groups to nitromethane. Mild oxidation conditions were identified to afford the corresponding benzophenones via the Nef reaction, and reduction conditions were optimized to afford several diaryl methylamines.

- A new paradigm for carbon-carbon bond formation: Aerobic, copper-templated cross-coupling
-
Thiol esters and boronic acids react to produce ketones under aerobic conditions in the presence of catalytic quantities of a CuI or CuII salt. The reaction occurs at reasonable rates between room temperature and 50 °C at neutral pH using thiol esters derived from bulky 2° amides of thiosalicylamides such as those based on N-tert-butyl-2-mercaptobenzamide. In this mechanistically unprecedented reaction system, the carbon-carbon bond formation occurs through templating of the thiol ester and the boronic acid at copper; the system is rendered catalytic in copper under the aerobic conditions. The palladium(II) chloride catalyzed cross-coupling of arylboronic acids with carboxylic anhydrides or acyl chlorides in water in the presence of various surfactants is described. - Direct observation of aldehyde insertion into rhodium-aryl and -alkoxide complexes
-
Several organorhodium(I) complexes of the general formula (PPh3)2(CO)RhR (R = p-tolyl, o-tolyl, Me) were isolated and were shown to insert aryl aldehydes into the aryl-rhodium(I) bond. Under nonaqueous conditions, these reactions provided ketones in good yield. The stability of the arylrhodium(I) complexes allowed these reactions to be run also in mixtures of THF and water. In this solvent system, diarylmethanols were generated exclusively. Mechanistic studies support the formation of ketone and diarylmethanol by insertion of aldehyde into the rhodium-aryl bond and subsequent β-hydride elimination or hydrolysis to form diaryl ketone or diarylmethanol products. Kinetic isotope effects and the formation of diarylmethanols in THF/water mixtures are inconsistent with oxidative addition of the acyl carbon-hydrogen bond and reductive elimination to form ketone. Moreover, the intermediate rhodium diarylmethoxide formed from insertion of aldehyde was observed directly during the reaction. Its structure was confirmed by independent synthesis. This complex undergoes β-hydrogen elimination to form a ketone. This alkoxide also reacts with a second aldehyde to form esters by insertion and subsequent β-hydrogen elimination. Thus, reactions of arylrhodium complexes with an excess of aldehyde formed esters by a double insertion and β-hydrogen elimination sequence.

- Electroorganic reactions. Part 56: Anodic oxidation of 2-methyl- and 2-benzylnaphthalenes: Factors influencing competing pathways
-
A systematic investigation of the anodic oxidation in nucleophilic media of 2-methyl and 2-benzylnaphthalenes, substituted at the 6-position in the naphthalene nucleus and at the 4-phenyl position of the benzylic side chain, has been carried out to identify factors favouring side-chain substitution. Cyclic voltammetry confirms that 6-substitution has a profound effect on the oxidation potentials of the naphthalene nucleus and 13C chemical shifts indicate polar effects at the benzylic carbon. However, little side-chain anodic oxidation is observed under any conditions tried; the radical-cations of electron-rich substrates preferentially dimerise and a strongly electron-withdrawing substituent at the 6-position (EtOSO2) promotes nuclear substitution. In contrast, oxidation with DDQ in aqueous acetic acid gives efficient side-chain oxidation for electron rich substrates, consistent with hydride transfer, possibly intramolecularly via a charge transfer complex.
