Interferonbeta1a/Humaninterferonbeta1a is used as an antineoplastic and biological response modifier for the treatment of relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS). It is believed to reverse a suppressor cell defect, favor the generation of T helper-2 type responses, and exert immunoregulatory and antiviral actions. The drug also has an antagonistic effect on γ-interferon, which is known to exacerbate the symptoms of MS. This overall beneficial effect contributes to the slower progression to disability and a less noticeable breakdown of the blood-brain barrier in patients treated with interferon beta-1a.
Interferonbeta1a/Humaninterferonbeta1a is used as a potential abortifacient and an inhibitor of cytochrome P450. The dosage form is a powder for solution that is reconstituted in sterile water, with excipients including human albumin, sodium chloride, and phosphate buffer.
