Auto de-bromine-coupling reactions of 1-aryl-7-bromocycloheptenes to a new series of [7-6-6] tricyclic system were described. A variety of substituents at the para-position of the phenyl were amenable to this transformation, including electron-donating groups and halides. The presence of electron-donating groups resulted in a more efficient reaction, with higher yields than the case of halides.

The invention discloses a cycloheptane compound, a liquid crystal composition containing the compound and an application of the cycloheptane compound and belongs to the field of liquid crystal materials. The liquid crystal compound is a compound with a chemical formula I; the compound is extremely high in chemical property and physical stability. Compared with a product of the same type, the compound is high in clearing point, proper in optical anisotropy, low rotary viscosity and high response speed and is applicable to a liquid crystal display, especially TN type, VA type, IPS type and PDLC type displays.
