- Helquats as Promoters of the Povarov Reaction: Synthesis of 1,2,3,4-Tetrahydroquinoline Scaffolds Catalyzed by Helicene-Viologen Hybrids
-
Helquats (HQs) are structurally linked to helicenes and viologens, and they represent an attractive field of research in chemistry and medicinal chemistry. In the present work they were used as catalysts for the synthesis of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolines in good yields by the Povarov reaction. The substrate scope and the capability of different helquats to promote Povarov reactions are demonstrated. Studies to elucidate mechanistic details revealed that helquats act as single-electron transfer oxidants through a cation-radical mechanism. The screening of the catalytic activity of HQs confirmed that an active HQ must have a LUMO energy below ?8.67 eV and the standard redox potential higher (less negative) than ?1.2 V vs. the ferrocene/ferrocenium redox couple.

- Sulfonated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as a new, efficient, and recyclable heterogeneous nanocatalyst for the synthesis of amines
-
Sulfonated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were synthesized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) as a new and facile one-pot method using acetylene (as the CNT precursor), thiophene (as the sulfur precursor), and ferrocene (for in situ liberation of metal nanoparticles as the CNT nanocatalyst). A low catalytic amount of the resulting sulfonated MWCNTs with a turnover number (TON) up to 980 and a turnover frequency (TOF) up to 11 160 h-1 was utilized as a new and recyclable heterogeneous nanocatalyst for the efficient one-pot synthesis of various amines (secondary and tertiary) by direct reductive amination of aldehydes and ketones using NaBH4. The catalyst was easily isolated from the reaction mixture by simple filtration and reused at least five times without significant degradation in activity.

- The NMR Spectra of the Porphyrins 17. Metalloporphyrins as Diamagnetic Shift Reagents, Structural and Specificity Studies
-
The nature of the metalloporphyrin-ligand complexes produced by zinc, magnesium and cobalt porphyrins with basic ligands has been investigated using the diamagnetic ring current shifts of the porphyrin on the ligand protons. The metal to nitrogen bond lengths in some metallo-meso-tetraphenylporphyrin (pyridine) complexes have been determined and compared with the data of the crystalline complexes. The geometry of the Zn meso-tetraphenylporphyrin complexes with 2-picoline, quinoline and isoquinoline has been investigated.Steric interactions between the ligand and the porphyrin in 2-picoline and quinoline produce a dramatic increase in the Zn-N bond length when compared to the unstrained analogues pyridine and isoquinoline. This large increase is associated with comparatively minor angle distortions in the complex. The specificity of the Zn meso-tetraphenylporphyrin complexation shifts has been determined for a range of benzyl and butyl compounds. The complexation shift is linearly related to the basicity of the ligand for a wide range of basicities.

- Ruthenium(II) complexes of pyridine-carboxamide ligands bearing appended benzothiazole/benzimidazole rings: Structural diversity and catalysis
-
A series of ruthenium(II) complexes (1–6) of pyridine-carboxamide ligands, HLBT/BI (HLBT = N-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)picolinamide and HLBI = N-(1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)picolinamide), have been synthesized. All Ru(II) complexes have been characterized by using various spectroscopic techniques (FTIR, UV–Visible, 1H, 13C, 31P NMR and ESI-MS), conductivity and elemental analyses. The solid-state structures of all Ru(II) complexes, except 2, were substantiated by the single crystal X-ray diffraction technique that revealed versatile coordination modes of two bidentate ligands varying between N–N and N–O modes. All Ru(II) complexes exhibited a distorted octahedral geometry with a bidentate ligand while other coordination sites are occupied by either anionic Cl? or neutral co-ligands (CO, PPh3, CH3CN or (CH3)2SO). These well-defined ruthenium(II) complexes have been utilized as the homogeneous catalysts for the alkylation of amines using alcohols ensuing hydrogen borrowing strategy. Out of six complexes, 1 and 2 were found highly effective catalysts towards the N-alkylation of different amines with assorted alcohols. The alkylated products were obtained in excellent yields with good tolerance to a large variety of functional groups. To evaluate the role of putative Ru-hydride species as the intermediate during the catalytic cycle, the respective Ru-H complexes (7 and 8) were synthesized by the reaction of complexes 1 and 2 with NaBH4. Both Ru-H complexes were characterized using different spectroscopic techniques and crystallography. Importantly, both Ru-H complexes, 7 and 8, were directly able to alkylate imine using alcohol thus confirming the involvement of Ru-hydride species as the intermediates during the proposed catalytic cycle.

- Hetero- A nd Homobimetallic Complexes Bridged by a Bis(NHC) Ligand: Synthesis via Selective Sequential Metalation and Catalytic Applications in Tandem Organic Transformations
-
A (bis)azolium salt [L1-H2]Br2 (5), synthesized following multistep procedures, was realized to be a suitable platform for accessing the bis(NHC) ligand supported heterobimetallic IrIII-M (M = PdII/AuI) complexes via a sequential metalation strategy for their potential catalytic applications in one-pot tandem organic transformations. First, the reaction of 5 with 0.5 equiv of [Ir(Cp-)Cl2]2 selectively yielded a monometallic IrIII complex 6, which was further metalated using Pd(OAc)2/NaOAc to afford the heterobimetallic IrIII-PdII complex 7. On the other hand, complex 6 was reacted with Ag2O, followed by transmetalation with [Au(SMe2)Cl] in a one-pot manner, to yield the IrIII-AuI complex 8. Further, the related homobimetallic IrIII and PdII complexes 9 and 10, respectively, have also been synthesized directly from [L1-H2]Br2. All the homo/heterobimetallic complexes have been well-characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, ESI-mass spectrometry, and via single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies of the complexes 7, 8, and 10. The heterobimetallic IrIII-PdII complex 7 has been tested as a catalyst for three one-pot tandem catalytic reactions: (a) Suzuki-Miyaura coupling and transfer hydrogenation of ketones, (b) hydrodefluorination and transfer hydrogenation of ketones, and (c) hydrodehalogenation and transfer hydrogenation of imines. Importantly, the catalytic activity of heterobimetallic complex 7 in the above-mentioned reactions was found to be better than the mixture of their corresponding homobimetallic counterparts 9 and 10, keeping the concentration of the metal centers constant. These observations affirm some sort of cooperativity between the two metal centers (Ir and Pd) connected via a single ligand frame in 7 when catalytic activity is concerned, which thus constitutes a superior catalytic system than that of the cases where two separate metal complexes (hence, the two metal centers are not connected by a single ligand framework) are used.

Metal hydride complexes are key intermediates forN-alkylation of amines with alcohols by the borrowing hydrogen/hydrogen autotransfer (BH/HA) strategy. Reactivity tuning of metal hydride complexes could adjust the dehydrogenation of alcohols and the hydrogenation of imines. Herein we report ruthenium(ii) complexes with hetero-bidentate N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-phosphine ligands, which realize smart pathway selection in theN-alkylated reactionviareactivity tuning of [Ru-H] species by hetero-bidentate ligands. In particular, complex6cbwith a phenyl wingtip group and BArF?counter anion, is shown to be one of the most efficient pre-catalysts for this transformation (temperature is as low as 70 °C, neat conditions and catalyst loading is as low as 0.25 mol%). A large variety of (hetero)aromatic amines and primary alcohols were efficiently converted into mono-N-alkylated amines in good to excellent isolated yields. Notably, aliphatic amines, challenging methanol and diamines could also be transformed into the desired products. Detailed control experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations provide insights to understand the mechanism and the smart pathway selectionvia[Ru-H] species in this process.

- Synthesis of an Fe-Pd bimetallic catalyst for: N -alkylation of amines with alcohols via a hydrogen auto-transfer methodology
-
Hydrogen auto-transfer (HAT) or borrowing hydrogen (BH) methodology which combines dehydrogenation, intermediate reaction and hydrogenation, is recognized as an excellent strategy for one-pot synthesis from an economic and environmental point of view. Although much effort has been made on the development of catalysts for HAT reactions, harsh conditions, external base or large amounts of noble metals are still required in most reported catalysis systems, and thus the exploration of a highly efficient and recyclable heterogeneous catalyst remains meaningful. In this work, a novel bimetallic catalyst, Fe10Pd1/NC500 derived from bimetallic MOF NH2-MIL-101(Fe10Pd1), has been prepared, and the catalyst exhibits superior catalytic performance for the N-alkylation of amines with alcohols via a hydrogen auto-transfer methodology. High yields of the desired products were achieved at 120 °C with an alcohol/amine molar ratio of 2?:?1 and required no external additive or solvent. A distinct enhancement in catalytic performance is observed when compared with monometallic catalysts, which can be ascribed to the "synergistic effects"inside the bimetallic alloys. The N-doped carbon support has been revealed to provide the necessary basicity which avoids the requirement of an external base. Moreover, a wide substrate range and remarkable reusability have been shown by Fe10Pd1/NC500, and this work highlights new possibilities for bimetallic catalysts applied in sustainable chemistry.

- Silver/manganese dioxide nanorod catalyzed hydrogen-borrowing reactions and tert-butyl ester synthesis

Silver/manganese dioxide (Ag@MnO2) nanorods are synthesized and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Mechanistic experiments revealed that this catalytic system acts as a Lewis acid in hydrogen-borrowing reactions, while the synthesis of tert-butyl esters occurs through a radical pathway. This is the first report on the excellent catalytic activity of Ag@MnO2 nanorods as a catalyst.

- Mimicking transition metals in borrowing hydrogen from alcohols
-
Borrowing hydrogen from alcohols, storing it on a catalyst and subsequent transfer of the hydrogen from the catalyst to anin situgenerated imine is the hallmark of a transition metal mediated catalyticN-alkylation of amines. However, such a borrowing hydrogen mechanism with a transition metal free catalytic system which stores hydrogen molecules in the catalyst backbone is yet to be established. Herein, we demonstrate that a phenalenyl ligand can imitate the role of transition metals in storing and transferring hydrogen molecules leading to borrowing hydrogen mediated alkylation of anilines by alcohols including a wide range of substrate scope. A close inspection of the mechanistic pathway by characterizing several intermediates through various spectroscopic techniques, deuterium labelling experiments, and DFT study concluded that the phenalenyl radical based backbone sequentially adds H+, H˙ and an electron through a dearomatization process which are subsequently used as reducing equivalents to the C-N double bond in a catalytic fashion.

- Synthesis of NHC-Iridium(III) Complexes Based on N-Iminoimidazolium Ylides and Their Use for the Amine Alkylation by Borrowing Hydrogen Catalysis
-
Anionic NHC ligands recently developed in our group, derived from N-iminoimidazolium ylides, were used to synthesize NHC-iridium(III) complexes. Their catalytic activities were evaluated in the amine alkylation of anilines using borrowing hydrogen catalysis. The high-yielding synthesis of a small library of complexes allowed a rapid screening of the ideal steric bulk of the NHC unit and basicity of the anionic tether for the investigated model reaction. A bulky aromatic N group on the imidazolidene moiety is required to achieve high catalytic activity, and the latter is proportional to the basicity of the anionic group. A selected substrate scope of the reaction was performed, providing fair to excellent yields of the desired alkylated anilines.

- A Fe single atom on N,S-doped carbon catalyst for performing N-alkylation of aromatic amines under solvent-free conditions

Iron-catalyzed oxidative amination of benzylic C(sp3)–H bonds with anilines bearing electron-withdrawing groups (EWGs) or electron-donating groups (EDGs) is realized based on simple variations of N-substituents on imidazolium cations in novel ionic Fe(III) complexes. - Photocatalytic Water-Splitting Coupled with Alkanol Oxidation for Selective N-alkylation Reactions over Carbon Nitride
-
Photocatalytic water splitting technology (PWST) enables the direct use of water as appealing “liquid hydrogen source” for transfer hydrogenation reactions. Currently, the development of PWST-based transfer hydrogenations is still in an embryonic stage. Previous reports generally centered on the rational utilization of the in situ generated H-source (electrons) for hydrogenations, in which photogenerated holes were quenched by sacrificial reagents. Herein, the fully-utilization of the liquid H-source and holes during water splitting is presented for photo-reductive N-alkylation of nitro-aromatic compounds. In this integrate system, H-species in situ generated from water splitting were designed for nitroarenes reduction to produce amines, while alkanols were oxidized by holes for cascade alkylating of anilines as well as the generated secondary amines. More than 50 examples achieved with a broad range scope validate the universal applicability of this mild and sustainable coupling approach. The synthetic utility of this protocol was further demonstrated by the synthesis of existing pharmaceuticals via selective N-alkylation of amines. This strategy based on the sustainable water splitting technology highlights a significant and promising route for selective synthesis of valuable N-alkylated fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals from nitroarenes and amines with water and alkanols.

The development of active and selective non-noble metal-based catalysts for the chemoselective reduction of nitro compounds in aquo media under mild conditions is an attractive research area. Herein, the synthesis of subnanometric and stable cobalt nanoclusters, covered by N-doped carbon layers as core-shell (Co@NC-800), for the chemoselective reduction of nitroarenes is reported. TheCo@NC-800catalyst was prepared by the pyrolysis of the Co(tpy)2complex impregnated on Vulcan carbon. In fact, the use of a molecular complex based on six N-Co bonds drives the formation of a well-defined and distributed cobalt core-shell nanocluster covered by N-doped carbon layers. In order to elucidate its nature, it has been fully characterized by using several advanced techniques. In addition, this as-prepared catalyst showed high activity, chemoselectivity and stability toward the reduction of nitro compounds with H2and under mild reaction conditions; water was used as a green solvent, improving the previous results based on cobalt catalysts. Moreover, theCo@NC-800catalyst is also active and selective for the one-pot synthesis of secondary aryl amines and isoindolinones through the reductive amination of nitroarenes. Finally, based on diffraction and spectroscopic studies, metallic cobalt nanoclusters with surface CoNxpatches have been proposed as the active phase in theCo@NC-800material.

- Porous polymeric ligand promoted copper-catalyzed C-N coupling of (hetero)aryl chlorides under visible-light irradiation
-
A porous polymeric ligand (PPL) has been synthesized and complexed with copper to generate a heterogeneous catalyst (Cu@PPL) that has facilitated the efficient C-N coupling with various (hetero)aryl chlorides under mild conditions of visible-light irradiation at 80 °C (58 examples, up to 99% yields). This method could be applied to both aqueous ammonia and substituted amines, and is compatible to a variety of functional groups and heterocycles, as well as allows tandem C-N couplings with conjunctive dihalides. Furthermore, the heterogeneous characteristic of Cu@PPL has enabled a straightforward catalyst separation in multiple times of recycling with negligible catalytic efficiency loss by simple filtration, affording reaction mixtures containing less than 1 ppm of Cu residue. - Product selective reaction controlled by the combination of palladium nanoparticles, continuous microwave irradiation, and a co-existing solid; ligand-free Buchwald-Hartwig aminationvs.aryne amination
-
We have developed a continuous microwave irradiation-assisted Buchwald-Hartwig amination using our original Pd nanoparticle catalyst with a copper plate as a co-existing metal solid. In this methodology, a microwave-controlled product selectivity was achieved between Buchwald-Hartwig amination and aryne amination performed under strongly basic conditions and at a high reaction temperature, because a polar chemical species such as Ar-Pd-halogen might be activated selectively by microwave radiation. Moreover, our catalyst could be used repeatedly over 10 times, and the amount of Pd leaching could be suppressed to a low level.

- Ligand compound for copper catalyzed aryl halide coupling reaction, catalytic system and coupling reaction
-
The invention provides a ligand compound capable of being used for copper catalyzed aryl halide coupling reaction, the ligand compound is a three-class compound containing a 2-(substituted or non-substituted) aminopyridine nitrogen-oxygen group, and the invention also provides a catalytic system for the aryl halide coupling reaction. Thecatalytic system comprises a copper catalyst, a compound containing a 2-(substituted or non-substituted) aminopyridine nitrogen-oxygen group adopted as a ligand, alkali and a solvent, and meanwhile, the invention also provides a system for the aryl halide coupling reaction adopting the catalyst system. The compound containing the 2-(substituted or non-substituted) aminopyridine nitrogen oxygen group can be used as the ligand for the copper catalyzed aryl chloride coupling reaction, and the ligand is stable under a strong alkaline condition and can well maintain catalytic activity when being used for the copper-catalyzed aryl chloride coupling reaction. In addition, the copper catalyst adopting the compound as the ligand can particularly effectively promote coupling of copper catalyzed aryl chloride and various nucleophilic reagents which are difficult to generate under conventional conditions, C-N, C-O and C-S bonds are generated, and numerous useful small molecule compounds are synthesized. Therefore, the aryl halide coupling reaction has a very good large-scale application prospect by adopting the copper catalysis system of the ligand.

- BF3·Et2O as a metal-free catalyst for direct reductive amination of aldehydes with amines using formic acid as a reductant
-
A versatile metal- and base-free direct reductive amination of aldehydes with amines using formic acid as a reductant under the catalysis of inexpensive BF3·Et2O has been developed. A wide range of primary and secondary amines and diversely substituted aldehydes are compatible with this transformation, allowing facile access to various secondary and tertiary amines in high yields with wide functional group tolerance. Moreover, the method is convenient for the late-stage functionalization of bioactive compounds and preparation of commercialized drug molecules and biologically relevant N-heterocycles. The procedure has the advantages of simple operation and workup and easy scale-up, and does not require dry conditions, an inert atmosphere or a water scavenger. Mechanistic studies reveal the involvement of imine activation by BF3and hydride transfer from formic acid.

- Homogeneous cobalt-catalyzed deoxygenative hydrogenation of amides to amines
-
The first general and efficient cobalt-catalyzed deoxygenative hydrogenation of amides to amines is presented. The optimal catalytic system based on a combination of [Co(NTf2)2] and (p-anisyl)triphos (L3) in the presence of [Me3SiOTf] as acidic co-catalyst facilitates the direct hydrogenation of a broad range of amides to the corresponding amines under mild conditions. A set of control experiments indicate that, after the initial reduction of the amide carboxylic group to the well-known hemiaminal intermediate, the reaction mainly proceeds through C-O bond cleavage though other pathways might be also involved to a minor extent. An efficient zinc-catalyzed N-alkylation reaction of aromatic amines was achieved using aliphatic, aromatic, and heteroaromatic alcohols as the alkylating reagent. A variety of aniline derivatives, including heteroaromatic amines, underwent the N-alkylation reaction and furnished the corresponding monoalkylated products in good to excellent yields. The application of the reaction is also further demonstrated by the synthesis of a 2-phenylquinoline derivative from acetophenone and 2-aminobenzyl alcohol. Deuterium labeling experiments show that the reaction proceeds via a borrowing hydrogen process. (Figure presented.).

The solid-state structures of Ru(II) complexes (2 and 3) were established by single crystal X-ray analyses and revealed distorted octahedral geometries around the ruthenium(II) ion and mono anionic bidentate N^N coordination mode for hydrazine ligand. The Ru(II) complexes 2 and 3 were also analyzed using Hirshfeld surface analysis and DFT calculations. Moreover, all the complexes (1–4) were utilized in the N-alkylation reactions of amines using alcohol. Complex 3 was found to be highly active towards N-alkylation of different aromatic amines with alcohol.

- Scalable preparation of stable and reusable silica supported palladium nanoparticles as catalysts for N-alkylation of amines with alcohols
-
The development of nanoparticles-based heterogeneous catalysts continues to be of scientific and industrial interest for the advancement of sustainable chemical processes. Notably, up-scaling the production of catalysts to sustain unique structural features, activities and selectivities is highly important and remains challenging. Herein, we report the expedient synthesis of Pd-nanoparticles as amination catalysts by the reduction of simple palladium salt on commercial silica using molecular hydrogen. The resulting Pd-nanoparticles constitute stable and reusable catalysts for the synthesis of various N-alkyl amines using borrowing hydrogen technology without the use of any base or additive. By applying this Pd-based catalyst, functionalized and structurally diverse N-alkylated amines as well as some selected drug molecules were synthesized in good to excellent yields. Practical and synthetic utility of this Pd-based amination protocol has been demonstrated by upscaling catalyst preparation and amination reactions to several grams-scales as well as recycling of catalyst. Noteworthy, this Pd-catalyst preparation has been up-scaled to kilogram scale and catalysts prepared in both small (1 g) and large-scale (kg) exhibited similar structural features and activity.

- Ruthenium(II) Complexes of Heteroditopic N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands: Efficient Catalysts for C-N Bond Formation via a Hydrogen-Borrowing Strategy under Solvent-Free Conditions
-
Both imidazol-2-ylidene (ImNHC) and 1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene (tzNHC) have evolved to be elite groups of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands for homogeneous catalysis. To develop efficient ruthenium(II)-based catalysts incorporating these ligands for C-N bond-forming reactions via hydrogen-borrowing methodology, we utilized chelating ligands integrated with ImNHC and mesoionic tzNHC donors connected via a CH2 spacer with a diverse triazole backbone. The synthesized ruthenium(II) complexes 3 are found to be highly efficient for C-N bond formation across a wide range of primary amine and alcohol substrates under solvent-free conditions, and among all of the complexes studied here, catalyst 3a with a mesityl substituent displayed maximum activity. To our delight, catalyst 3a is also effective for the selective mono-N-methylation of various anilines utilizing methanol as a coupling partner, known to be relatively more difficult than other alcohols. Furthermore, complex 3a also delivers various substituted quinolines successfully via the reaction of 2-aminobenzyl alcohol with several secondary alcohols. Importantly, catalyst 3a exhibited the highest activity among the reported ruthenium(II) complexes for both the N-benzylation of aniline [achieving a turnover number (TON) of 50000] and the realization of quinoline 8a by reacting 2-aminobenzyl alcohol with 2-phenylethanol (attaining a TON of 30000).

- Heterostructured Hybrid rGO@α-MnO2/rGO@δ-MnO2 Nanoflower: An Efficient Catalyst for Aerobic Solvent-Free N-Alkylation Reactions and Energy Storage Material
-
A new reduced graphene oxide (rGO) based bi-phasic crystal of MnO2, namely α-MnO2 nanorods and δ-MnO2 nanoflakes containing heterostructured hybrid nanoflower rGO@α-MnO2/rGO@δ-MnO2 has been fabricated through a facile hydrothermal method followed by annealing treatment. The successful synthesis of the hybrid material was studied by XRD, Raman, BET, FESEM with EDX, FTIR and TEM analyses. An efficient N-alkylation reaction of substituted aromatic amines with aromatic alcohols was carried out under solvent-free aerobic conditions in the presence of catalytic amount of rGO@α-MnO2/rGO@δ-MnO2. The catalyst shows excellent activity in terms of high yields (up to 98 %), short reaction time (10 h) along with a simple work-up process. The spent material can be regenerated several times without causing any serious decrease in catalytic activity. Moreover, cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD), and cyclic stability techniques were executed to evaluate the performances of rGO@α-MnO2, rGO@δ-MnO2, and rGO@α-MnO2/rGO@δ-MnO2 as energy storage materials. Among all those materials, rGO@α-MnO2/rGO@δ-MnO2 exhibited a proficient specific capacitance, CS (267 F/g at 1 A/g) along with excellent cycling ability (~83 % retention up to 10000 cycles). The superb electrochemical performance of rGO@α-MnO2/rGO@δ-MnO2 might be ascribed to the combination of bi-phasic α-MnO2 and δ-MnO2 with rGO sheets, resulting in a flower-like structure.

- Alkali Metal–Promoted Facile Synthesis of Secondary Amines from Imines and Carbodiimides
-
We present here an efficient method for the hydroboration of aldimines (-C=N-) with pinacolborane (HBpin) using an alkali metal catalyst, potassium benzyl. The reaction was accomplished with unprecedented catalytic efficiency under mild and solvent-free conditions to afford the high yield of the corresponding N-boryl amines up to 97percent. Various functionalities on aldimines were incorporated for hydroboration. The corresponding boryl amines were subjected to further hydrolysis to yield the corresponding secondary amines with good yields up to 89percent. This protocol for the reaction demonstrates an atom-economic and green method with diverse imines that bears excellent functional group tolerance. Chemoselective reduction of imines was also attained, with good yields of 74–89percent. We also propose the most plausible mechanism involving the formation of metal hydride as the active pre-catalyst.

- Diethylsilane as a Powerful Reagent in Au Nanoparticle-Catalyzed Reductive Transformations
-
Diethylsilane (Et2SiH2), a simple and readily available dihydrosilane, that exhibits superior reactivity, as compared to monohydrosilanes, in a series of reductive transformations catalyzed by recyclable and reusable Au nanoparticles (1 mol-%) supported on TiO2. It reduces aldehydes or ketones almost instantaneously at ambient conditions. It can be used in a one pot rapid reductive amination procedure, in which premixing of aldehyde and amine is required prior to the addition of the reducing agent and the catalyst, even in a protic solvent. An unprecedented method for the synthesis of N-arylisoindolines is also shown in the reductive amination between o-phthalaldehyde and anilines. In this transformation, it is proposed that the intermediate N,2-diphenylisoindolin-1-imines are reduced stepwise to the isoindolines. Finally, Et2SiH2 readily reduces amides into amines in excellent yields and shorter reaction times relative to previously known analogous nano Au(0)-catalyzed protocols.
