- CATALYTIC CONVERSIONS OF METHYLTETRAHYDROPHTHALIC ANHYDRIDE.
-
Methyltetrahydrophthalic anhydride (MTHPA) and mixtures of its isomers are among the widely used intermediates for production of polyester and epoxy resins. Information on methods of production of MHHPA and MPA (methylpthalic anhydride) is confined to a few patents. The possibility of obtaining them from MTHPA by hydrogenation and dehydrogenation respectively is of interest. Experimental evidence shows that alumina-palladium catalyst with a palladium content of 5. 0 mass % has the highest activity and selectivity in synthesis of 4-MPA. The yield of 4-MPA under the optimal conditions found is 60-61% on the converted feed, with 100% conversion. Alumina-palladium catalyst with a palladium content of 3. 0 mass % has the highest activity and selectivity in synthesis of 4-MHHPA. Under the optimal conditions found the yield of 4-MHHPA is 75-80% on the converted feed, with 100% conversion.

- CLAISEN-REARRANGEMENT-MEDIATED RING CONTRACTION OF MACROCYCLIC LACTONES A NEW APPROACH TO CARBOCYCLES AND HETEROCYCLES
-
Macrocyclic ketene acetals 3 undergo Claisen rearrangements smoothly and constitute a viable and general approach to hetero- or carbocyclic ring systems 4.This novel ring contraction process is subject to high internal asymmetric induction (cf. lactones 7 -> carbocycles 8) as well as relative asymmetric induction in the rearrangements of ketene acetals derived from lactones 18, 23 and 27.Finally, N-benzoylmeroquinene methyl ester (37) was prepared to demonstrate the potential of this methodology in heterocycle synthesis.

- CONVERSION OF cis-4-METHYL-1,2,3,6-TETRAHYDROPHTHALIC ANHYDRIDE ON METALLIC CATALYSTS.
-
The hydrogenating and dehydrogenating properties of platinum, palladium, and nickel deposited on alumina were studied in the vapor-phase conversion of cis-4-methyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydrophthalic anhydride in a flow-type apparatus. Conversion of 4-MTHPA on platinum and palladium proceeds virtually without destruction of the original molecule. The alumina-palladium catalyst with a palladium content of 2. 0 mass % has the highest activity and selectivity. The yield of 4-MHHPA and 4-MPA at 300 degree is 94. 5% on the converted feed, with 94. 8% conversion. Alumina-nickel catalysts exhibit mainly isomerization and dehydrogenation activity. Increase of the content of the active component in the catalyst intensifies its dehydrogenating action. Introduction of alkaline additives weakens the dehydrogenating and cracking functions.
