- Sequential hydroaminomethylation/Pd-catalyzed hydrogenolysis as an atom efficient route to valuable primary and secondary amines
-
The facile synthesis of valuable primary and secondary amines is reported using a sequential procedure of hydroaminomethylation and Pd-catalyzed hydrogenolysis. The hydroaminomethylation reaction was catalyzed by a cationic Rh(I) iminopyridyl complex and the N-alkylated benzylamines were produced with high chemoselectivity, albeit as mixtures of linear and branched products. Performing the hydrogenolysis reaction using 10% Pd/C, provided access to valuable primary and secondary amines which have applications in the surfactant, pharmaceutical and polymer industries.

- NNP-Type Pincer Imidazolylphosphine Ruthenium Complexes: Efficient Base-Free Hydrogenation of Aromatic and Aliphatic Nitriles under Mild Conditions
-
A series of seven novel NImNHP-type pincer imidazolylphosphine ruthenium complexes has been synthesized and fully characterized. The use of hydrogenation of benzonitrile as a benchmark test identified [RuHCl(CO)(NImNHPtBu)] as the most active catalyst. With its stable Ru-BH4 analogue, in which chloride is replaced by BH4, a broad range of (hetero)aromatic and aliphatic nitriles, including industrially interesting adiponitrile, has been hydrogenated under mild and base-free conditions.

- Preparation of amines
-
A process for preparing an amine by catalytic reaction of an olefin with ammonia or a primary or secondary amine by contacting a mixture of the reactants in a reactor at 200° to 400° C. and an elevated pressure up to 700 bar in the presence of a catalyst consisting essentially of an X-ray amorphous (non-crystalline) mesoporous catalyst, some of which may have a microporous non-crystalline content. The catalyst has the composition where Q is at least one of the trivalent elements aluminum, boron, chromium, iron or gallium, and M is at least one of the tetravalent elements silicon, titanium or germanium. The molar ratio of a:b is from 0.5:1 to 1000:1 and the molar ratio of c:b is from 0 to 2:1. As prepared and used in the process, this non-crystalline catalyst has a specific BET surface area of from 200 to 1000 m2 /g.

- Preparation of esters of phosphorus acids
-
Esters of phosphorus acids are prepared by an improved process whereby aromatic alcohols and phosphorus halides are reacted at specified temperatures in the presence of amine catalysts thereby providing high yields of substantially pure esters and allowing preparation of selected halogen-containing mono- and di-esters of phosphorus acids wherein halogen is directly bonded to phosphorus having substantially no side reactant contamination. The phosphorus esters are useful as intermediates in the preparation of plasticizers, oil additives and functional fluids.
