Crystalline N,N-dimethyl-n-tetradecylamine oxide has been prepared by reaction of liquid N,N-dimethyl-n-tetradecylamine with 70% H2O2 in the presence of CO2 as catalyst. The resulting soft low-melting solid was crystallized as the dihydrate, viz. C16H35NO·2H2O. The extended hydrocarbon chains pack in a parallel fashion, with the N-oxide ends of the molecules forming hydrogen bonds with the water molecules in hydrophilic layers. The N - O distance is 1.411 (3) A.

- Production of solid tertiary amine oxides

A process for producing tertiary amine oxide having two methyl or ethyl groups and one long chain primary aliphatic group in a stable, solid form is described. Aqueous 65-90% hydrogen peroxide and tertiary amine having two methyl or ethyl groups and one primary aliphatic hydrocarbyl group of 8-24 carbon atoms are mixed in proportions of ca. 1.1-1.3 moles of hydrogen peroxide per mole of tertiary amine in the presence of carbon dioxide and in the absence of organic solvent. When the conversion of the tertiary amine to tertiary amine oxide in the reaction mass has reached ca. 60-90%, the reaction mass is transferred to a separate vessel and the reaction mass is then allowed to solidify at a temperature of ca. 20-60° C. The process makes possible the production of highly pure solid product without formation of any appreciable amounts of undesirable by-products. Also, the process is environmentally friendly, and the problems and expense associated with product workup, purification, crystallization, and waste product disposal are largely, if not entirely, avoided. Moreover, the solid storage stable products can be stored and shipped at significantly reduced costs as compared to liquid solutions. The products are useful in the manufacture of household and commercial laundry detergent formulations furnished in the form of powders or flakes.

A solid amine oxide is prepared by reacting a tert-amine with at least a stoichiometric amount of an aqueous hydrogen peroxide having a concentration of at least 50% by weight in the presence as the reaction medium of a normally gaseous material which (a) has a critical temperature 160° C. and a critical pressure 12 MPa, (b) is in a liquefied, densified, or supercritical state in which it has a density of at least 0.1 g/cc, and (c) is present in an amount sufficient to maintain the reaction mixture stirrable throughout the reaction.

Hydrocarbyl mercaptans are oxidized to sulfonic acids by reaction with aqueous hydrogen peroxide in the presence of an inorganic base (e.g. sodium hydroxide) and a tert-amine oxide. The product is in the form of a sulfonate salt. The reaction rate is increased and undesirable free-oil by-product is decreased by the inclusion of the amine oxide catalyst.

EDA-iodine complex with trialkylamine oxides in dichloromethane have been investigated spectrophotometrically.Thermodynamic (KADc,-ΔG0) and spectral (ΕADλ) characteristics of these complexes were determined.The absorption band of iodine in the visible region was blue-shifted with a variable maximum, depending on the structure of the amine oxide.The KADc and ΕADλ values were calculated using a modified method.A non-linear relationship KADc=(R), where R is the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl chain, was found.
