- Design, synthesis and evaluation of novel bis-substituted aromatic amide dithiocarbamate derivatives as colchicine site tubulin polymerization inhibitors with potent anticancer activities
-
As the continuation of our work on the development of tubulin inhibitors with potential anticancer activities, novel bis-substituted aromatic amide dithiocarbamate derivatives were designed by contacting bis-substituted aryl scaffolds (potential anti-tubulin fragments) with N-containing heterocycles (potential anti-tubulin fragments) in one hybrid using the anticancer dithioformate unit as the linker. The antiproliferative activity against three digestive tract tumor cells was evaluated and preliminary structure activity relationships were summarized. Among these compounds, compound 20q exhibited most potent antiproliferative activity against MGC-803, HCT-116, Kyse30 and Kyse450 cells with IC50 values of 0.084, 0.227, 0.069 and 0.078 μM, respectively. In further studies, compound 20q was identified as a novel tubulin inhibitor targeting the colchicine binding site. Compound 20q could inhibit the microtubule assembly and disrupt cytoskeleton in Kyse30 and Kyse450 cells. The results of molecular docking suggested that compound 20q could tightly bind into the colchicine binding site of tubulin by hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions. Compound 20q dose-dependently inhibited the cell growth and colony formation, effectively arrested cells at the G2/M phase and induce mitochondrial apoptosis in Kyse30 and Kyse450 cells. In addition, Compound 20q could regulate the expression of G2/M phase and mitochondrial apoptosis related proteins. Collectively, compound 20q was here reported as a novel tubulin inhibitor with potential anticancer activities.

- Iridium/graphene nanostructured catalyst for the: N -alkylation of amines to synthesize nitrogen-containing derivatives and heterocyclic compounds in a green process
-
A facile iridium/graphene-catalyzed methodology providing an efficient synthetic route for C-N bond formation is reported. This catalyst can directly promote the formation of C-N bonds, without pre-activation steps, and without solvents, alkalis and other additives. This protocol provides a direct N-alkylation of amines using a variety of primary and secondary alcohols with good selectivity and excellent yields. Charmingly, the use of diols resulted in intermolecular cyclization of amines, and such products are privileged structures in biologically active compounds. Two examples illustrate the advantages of this catalyst in organic synthesis: the tandem catalysis to synthesize hydroxyzine, and the intermolecular cyclization to synthesize cyclizine. Water is the only by-product, which makes this catalytic process sustainable and environmentally friendly. This journal is

- Hydroboration and reductive amination of ketones and aldehydes with HBpin by a bench stable Pd(ii)-catalyst
-
A palladium(ii) complex [(κ4-{1,2-C6H4(NCH-C6H4O)2}Pd] (1) supported by a dianionic salen ligand [1,2-C6H4(NCH-C6H4O)2]2- (L) was synthesised and used as a molecular pre-catalyst in the hydroboration of aldehydes and ketones. The molecular structure of Pd(ii) complex 1 was established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Complex 1 was tested as a competent pre-catalyst in the hydroboration of aldehydes and ketones with pinacolborane (HBpin) to produce corresponding boronate esters in excellent yields at ambient temperature under solvent-free conditions. Further, the complex 1 proved to be a competent catalyst in the reductive amination of aldehydes with HBpin and primary amines under mild and solvent-free conditions to afford a high yield (up to 97%) of corresponding secondary amines. Both protocols provided high conversion, superior selectivity and broad substrate scope, from electron-withdrawing to electron-donating and heterocyclic substitutions. A computational study based on density functional theory (DFT) revealed a reaction mechanism for Pd-catalysed hydroboration of carbonyl species in the presence of HBpin. The protocols also uncovered the dual role of HBpin in achieving the hydroboration reaction.

The chemoselective hydroboration of aldehydes and ketones, catalyzed by Zinc(II) complexes [κ2-(PyCH=NR)ZnX2] [R=CPh3, X=Cl (1) and R=Dipp (2,6-diisoropylphenyl) and X=I (2)], in the presence of pinacolborane (HBpin) at ambient temperature and under solvent-free conditions, which produced the corresponding boronate esters in high yield, is reported. Zinc metal complexes 1 and 2 were derived in 80–90% yield from the reaction of iminopyridine [PyCH=NR] with anhydrous zinc dichloride in dichloromethane at room temperature. The solid-state structures of both zinc complexes were confirmed using X-ray crystallography. Zinc complex 1 was also used as a competent pre-catalyst in the reductive amination of carbonyl compounds with HBpin under mild and solvent-free conditions to afford a high yield (up to 97%) of the corresponding secondary amines. The wider substrate scope of both reactions was explored. Catalytic protocols using zinc as a pre-catalyst demonstrated an atom-economic and green method with diverse substrates bearing excellent functional group tolerance. Computational studies established a plausible mechanism for catalytic hydroboration.

- Selective C-C bonds formation, N-alkylation and benzo[d]imidazoles synthesis by a recyclable zinc composite
-
Earth abundant metals are much less expensive, promising, valuable metals and could be served as catalysts for the borrowing hydrogen reaction, dehydrogenation and heterocycles synthesis, instead of noble metals. The uniformly dispersed zinc composites were designed, synthesized and carefully characterized by means of XPS, EDS, TEM and XRD. The resulting zinc composite showed good catalytic activity for the N-alkylation of amines with amines, ketones with alcohols in water under base-free conditions, while unsaturated carbonyl compounds could also be synthesized by tuning the reaction conditions. Importantly, it was the first time to realize the synthesis of 2-aryl-1H-benzo[d]imidazole derivatives by using this zinc composite under green conditions. Meanwhile, this zinc catalyst could be easily recovered and reused for at least five times.

- BF3·Et2O as a metal-free catalyst for direct reductive amination of aldehydes with amines using formic acid as a reductant
-
A versatile metal- and base-free direct reductive amination of aldehydes with amines using formic acid as a reductant under the catalysis of inexpensive BF3·Et2O has been developed. A wide range of primary and secondary amines and diversely substituted aldehydes are compatible with this transformation, allowing facile access to various secondary and tertiary amines in high yields with wide functional group tolerance. Moreover, the method is convenient for the late-stage functionalization of bioactive compounds and preparation of commercialized drug molecules and biologically relevant N-heterocycles. The procedure has the advantages of simple operation and workup and easy scale-up, and does not require dry conditions, an inert atmosphere or a water scavenger. Mechanistic studies reveal the involvement of imine activation by BF3and hydride transfer from formic acid.

- Continuous flow heterogeneous catalytic reductive aminations under aqueous micellar conditions enabled by an oscillatory plug flow reactor
-
Despite the fact that continuous flow processing exhibits well-established technical advances, aqueous micellar chemistry, a field that has proven extremely useful in shifting organic synthesis to sustainable water-based media, has mostly been explored under conventional batch-based conditions. This is particularly because of the fact that the reliable handling of slurries and suspensions in flow has been considered as a significant technical challenge. Herein, we demonstrate that the strategic application of an oscillatory plug flow reactor enables heterogeneous catalytic reductive aminations in aqueous micellar media enhancing mass transport and facilitating process simplicity, stability and scalability. The micellar flow process enabled a broad range of substrates, including amino acid derivatives, to be successfully transformed under reasonably mild conditions utilizing only very low amounts of Pd/C as a readily available heterogeneous catalyst. The preparative capabilities of the process along with the recyclability of the heterogenous catalyst and the aqueous reaction media were also demonstrated. This journal is

- Phosphine ligands in the ruthenium-catalyzed reductive amination without an external hydrogen source
-
A systematic study of the phosphine additives influence on the activity of a ruthenium catalyst in reductive amination without an external hydrogen source was carried out. [CymeneRuCl2]2 was used as a reference catalyst, and a broad set of phosphines including Alk3P, Alk2ArP, Ar3P and X3P was screened. Three complexes of general formula (Cymene)RuCl2PR3 were isolated in a pure form, and their catalytic activity was compared with the in situ generated complexes. Nonhindered triarylphosphines with electron acceptor groups were found to be the most perspective activating agents, increasing the activity of the catalyst approx. six times, Alk2ArP ligands have less noticeable influence, while trialkylphosphines strongly deactivate the ruthenium catalyst.

- Reductive Alkylation of Azides and Nitroarenes with Alcohols: A Selective Route to Mono- And Dialkylated Amines
-
Herein, we demonstrated an efficient protocol for reductive alkylation of azides/nitro compounds via a borrowing hydrogen (BH) method. By following this protocol, selective mono- and dialkylated amines were obtained under mild and solvent-free conditions. A series of control experiments and deuterium-labeling experiments were performed to understand this catalytic process. Mechanistic studies suggested that the Ir(III)-H was the active intermediate in this reaction. KIE study revealed that the breaking of the C-H bond of alcohol might be the rate-limiting step. Notably, this solvent-free strategy disclosed a high TON of around 5600. Based on kinetic studies and control experiments, a metal-ligand cooperative mechanism was proposed.

- Stable Ni catalyst encapsulated in N-doped carbon nanotubes for one-pot reductive amination of nitroarenes with aldehydes
-
A novel strategy involving a popping process and carbothermal reduction was developed to create a kind of stable nickel catalyst (Ni-NC). The popping process of the mixture being composed of carbon nitride (C3N4) and nickel nitrate decomposed the nickel nitrate into nickel (oxide) nanoparticles that afterwards functioned as catalyst to grow N-containing carbon nanotubes with carbon nitride as N-containing carbon source. Finally, the nickel catalyst possessed a special structure of nanoparticles encapsulated in N-doped carbon nanotubes. This special structure is helpful to prevent nickel nanoparticles from being oxidized in air for months so that the catalyst exhibits high stability in air atmosphere. As a practical application, this encapsulated nickel catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic activity and stability in one-pot cascade reaction involving nitro-reduction and reductive amination of nitroarenes.

- Cobalt encapsulated in N?doped graphene sheet for one-pot reductive amination to synthesize secondary amines
-
To develop an efficient base-metal reductive amination catalyst for synthesis of secondary amines is still a major challenge. In this study, an efficient N-doped graphene sheet-coated cobalt catalyst (Co@CN-800) was developed through a simple pyrolysis process, which could gave 99.5 % yield of N-benzylaniline by one-pot reductive amination of nitrobenzene with benzaldehyde during at least 5 cycles. Catalyst characterization and control experiments confirmed that the robust catalytic performance of the catalyst is probably due to the synergy effect of in situ generated Co-Nx encapsulated in N?doped graphene layer and appropriate meso-pore structure. Additionally, The substrate adaptability of the catalyst was proved since a variety of corresponding secondary amines were smoothly obtained under relatively mild conditions, which makes the secondary amine synthesis strategy based on Co@CN-800 shows excellent application prospect.

Metal hydride complexes are key intermediates forN-alkylation of amines with alcohols by the borrowing hydrogen/hydrogen autotransfer (BH/HA) strategy. Reactivity tuning of metal hydride complexes could adjust the dehydrogenation of alcohols and the hydrogenation of imines. Herein we report ruthenium(ii) complexes with hetero-bidentate N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-phosphine ligands, which realize smart pathway selection in theN-alkylated reactionviareactivity tuning of [Ru-H] species by hetero-bidentate ligands. In particular, complex6cbwith a phenyl wingtip group and BArF?counter anion, is shown to be one of the most efficient pre-catalysts for this transformation (temperature is as low as 70 °C, neat conditions and catalyst loading is as low as 0.25 mol%). A large variety of (hetero)aromatic amines and primary alcohols were efficiently converted into mono-N-alkylated amines in good to excellent isolated yields. Notably, aliphatic amines, challenging methanol and diamines could also be transformed into the desired products. Detailed control experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations provide insights to understand the mechanism and the smart pathway selectionvia[Ru-H] species in this process.

- Synthesis of NHC-Iridium(III) Complexes Based on N-Iminoimidazolium Ylides and Their Use for the Amine Alkylation by Borrowing Hydrogen Catalysis
-
Anionic NHC ligands recently developed in our group, derived from N-iminoimidazolium ylides, were used to synthesize NHC-iridium(III) complexes. Their catalytic activities were evaluated in the amine alkylation of anilines using borrowing hydrogen catalysis. The high-yielding synthesis of a small library of complexes allowed a rapid screening of the ideal steric bulk of the NHC unit and basicity of the anionic tether for the investigated model reaction. A bulky aromatic N group on the imidazolidene moiety is required to achieve high catalytic activity, and the latter is proportional to the basicity of the anionic group. A selected substrate scope of the reaction was performed, providing fair to excellent yields of the desired alkylated anilines.

- Convenient and Reusable Manganese-Based Nanocatalyst for Amination of Alcohols
-
The development of new sustainable nanocatalytic systems for green chemical synthesis is a growing area in chemical science. Herein, a reusable heterogeneous N-doped graphene-based manganese nanocatalyst (Mn@NrGO) for selective N-alkylation of amines with alcohols is described. Mechanistic studies illustrate that the catalytic reaction follows a domino dehydrogenation-condensation-hydrogenation sequence of alcohols and amines with the formation of water as the sole by-product. The scope of the reaction is extended to the synthesis of pharmaceutically important N-alkylated amine intermediates. The heterogeneous nature of the catalyst made it easy to separate for long-term performance, and the recycling study revealed that the catalyst was robust and retained its activity after several recycling experiments.

- Mimicking transition metals in borrowing hydrogen from alcohols
-
Borrowing hydrogen from alcohols, storing it on a catalyst and subsequent transfer of the hydrogen from the catalyst to anin situgenerated imine is the hallmark of a transition metal mediated catalyticN-alkylation of amines. However, such a borrowing hydrogen mechanism with a transition metal free catalytic system which stores hydrogen molecules in the catalyst backbone is yet to be established. Herein, we demonstrate that a phenalenyl ligand can imitate the role of transition metals in storing and transferring hydrogen molecules leading to borrowing hydrogen mediated alkylation of anilines by alcohols including a wide range of substrate scope. A close inspection of the mechanistic pathway by characterizing several intermediates through various spectroscopic techniques, deuterium labelling experiments, and DFT study concluded that the phenalenyl radical based backbone sequentially adds H+, H˙ and an electron through a dearomatization process which are subsequently used as reducing equivalents to the C-N double bond in a catalytic fashion.

- Cooperative catalysis of molybdenum with organocatalysts for distribution of products between amines and imines
-
Multi-amino groups and nitrogen donors compound was discovered as an organocatalyst for N-alkylation of alcohols with amines in the presence of Mo(CO)6. The Mo(CO)6/organocatalyst binary system has shown to be a highly active catalyst for the N-alkylation reaction between alcohols and amines with excellent tolerance of variable starting materials bearing different functional groups. Of particular note, this method possessing a superiority selectivity in the synthesis of N-alkylated amines or imines, which can be controlled by the reaction temperature. The cooperative catalysis mechanism in combination of Mo(CO)6 with organocatalyst was elucidated by control experiments.

- Discovery of novel indole derivatives that inhibit NEDDylation and MAPK pathways against gastric cancer MGC803 cells
-
A series of novel indole derivatives were synthesized and evaluated for their antiproliferative activity against three selected cancer cell lines (MGC803, EC-109 and PC-3). Among these analogues, 2-(5-methoxy-1H-indol-1-yl)-N-(4-methoxybenzyl)-N-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)acetamide (V7) showed the best inhibitory activity against MGC803 cells with an IC50 value of 1.59 μM. Cellular mechanisms elucidated that V7 inhibited colony formation, induced apoptosis and arrested cell cycle at G2/M phase. Importantly, indole analogue V7 inhibited NEDDylation pathway and MAPK pathway against MGC803 cells.

- Nickel Complexes Bearing N,N,O-Tridentate Salicylaldiminato Ligand: Efficient Catalysts for Imines Formation via Dehydrogenative Coupling of Primary Alcohols with Amines
-
Treatment of salicylaldiminato ligand L1H-L2H (L1H = 2,4-di-tert-butyl-6-((quinolin-8-ylimino)methyl)phenol; L2H = 2,4-di-tert-butyl-6-(((2-(diethylamino)ethyl)imino)methyl)phenol) with Ni(OAc)2·4H2O in refluxing ethanol afforded nickel complexes [(L1)Ni(OAc)] (1) and [(L2)Ni(OAc)] (2), respectively. Reaction of L3H (L3H = (2,4-di-tert-butyl-6-(((2-(pyridin-2-yl)ethyl)imino)methyl)phenol)) with Ni(OAc)2·4H2O in the presence of excess triethylanmine gave the dual ligands coordinated nickel complex [(L2)2Ni] (3). Complexes 1-3 were well characterized by high-resolution mass spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and X-ray diffraction analysis. All the three Ni(II) complexes exhibited efficient activity and good selectivity in the acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling of alcohols and amines to produce imines and diimines. The present protocol provides an atom-economical and sustainable route for the synthesis of various imine derivatives by employing an earth-abundant nickel salt and easily prepared salicylaldiminato ligands.

- Hetero- A nd Homobimetallic Complexes Bridged by a Bis(NHC) Ligand: Synthesis via Selective Sequential Metalation and Catalytic Applications in Tandem Organic Transformations
-
A (bis)azolium salt [L1-H2]Br2 (5), synthesized following multistep procedures, was realized to be a suitable platform for accessing the bis(NHC) ligand supported heterobimetallic IrIII-M (M = PdII/AuI) complexes via a sequential metalation strategy for their potential catalytic applications in one-pot tandem organic transformations. First, the reaction of 5 with 0.5 equiv of [Ir(Cp-)Cl2]2 selectively yielded a monometallic IrIII complex 6, which was further metalated using Pd(OAc)2/NaOAc to afford the heterobimetallic IrIII-PdII complex 7. On the other hand, complex 6 was reacted with Ag2O, followed by transmetalation with [Au(SMe2)Cl] in a one-pot manner, to yield the IrIII-AuI complex 8. Further, the related homobimetallic IrIII and PdII complexes 9 and 10, respectively, have also been synthesized directly from [L1-H2]Br2. All the homo/heterobimetallic complexes have been well-characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, ESI-mass spectrometry, and via single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies of the complexes 7, 8, and 10. The heterobimetallic IrIII-PdII complex 7 has been tested as a catalyst for three one-pot tandem catalytic reactions: (a) Suzuki-Miyaura coupling and transfer hydrogenation of ketones, (b) hydrodefluorination and transfer hydrogenation of ketones, and (c) hydrodehalogenation and transfer hydrogenation of imines. Importantly, the catalytic activity of heterobimetallic complex 7 in the above-mentioned reactions was found to be better than the mixture of their corresponding homobimetallic counterparts 9 and 10, keeping the concentration of the metal centers constant. These observations affirm some sort of cooperativity between the two metal centers (Ir and Pd) connected via a single ligand frame in 7 when catalytic activity is concerned, which thus constitutes a superior catalytic system than that of the cases where two separate metal complexes (hence, the two metal centers are not connected by a single ligand framework) are used.

- Synthesis ofN-aryl amines enabled by photocatalytic dehydrogenation
-
Catalytic dehydrogenation (CD)viavisible-light photoredox catalysis provides an efficient route for the synthesis of aromatic compounds. However, access toN-aryl amines, which are widely utilized synthetic moieties,viavisible-light-induced CD remains a significant challenge, because of the difficulty in controlling the reactivity of amines under photocatalytic conditions. Here, the visible-light-induced photocatalytic synthesis ofN-aryl amines was achieved by the CD of allylic amines. The unusual strategy using C6F5I as an hydrogen-atom acceptor enables the mild and controlled CD of amines bearing various functional groups and activated C-H bonds, suppressing side-reaction of the reactiveN-aryl amine products. Thorough mechanistic studies suggest the involvement of single-electron and hydrogen-atom transfers in a well-defined order to provide a synergistic effect in the control of the reactivity. Notably, the back-electron transfer process prevents the desired product from further reacting under oxidative conditions.

- Efficient One-Pot Reductive Aminations of Carbonyl Compounds with Aquivion-Fe as a Recyclable Catalyst and Sodium Borohydride
-
A one-pot reductive amination of aldehydes and ketones with NaBH4 was developed with a view to providing efficient, economical and greener synthetic conditions. A recyclable iron-based Lewis catalyst, Aquivion-Fe, was used to promote imine formation in cyclopentyl methyl ether, followed by the addition of a small amount of methanol to the reaction mixture to enable C=N reduction by NaBH4. The protocol, applied to a wide number of amines and carbonyl compounds, resulted in ever complete conversion of these latter with excellent chemoselectivity towards the expected amination products in the most cases. Isolated yields, determined for a selection of the screened substrates, were found consistent with the previously obtained conversion and selectivity data. Cinacalcet, an important active pharmaceutical ingredient, was efficiently prepared by the title procedure.

- A proton-responsive annulated mesoionic carbene (MIC) scaffold on IR complex for proton/hydride shuttle: An experimental and computational investigation on reductive amination of aldehyde
-
A Cp*Ir(III) complex (1) bearing a proton-responsive hydroxy unit on an annulated imidazo[1,2-a][1,8]naphthyridine based mesoionic carbene scaffold was synthesized by two different synthetic routes. The molecular structure of 1 revealed an anionic lactam form of the ligand. The acid?base equilibrium between the lactam-lactim tautomers on the ligand scaffold was examined by 1H NMR and UV?vis spectra. The pKa of the appendage ?OH group in the lactim form of 1 was estimated to assess the proton transfer property of the catalyst. The catalytic efficacy of 1 for reductive amination of aldehyde was evaluated by utilizing three different hydrogen sources: molecular H2iPrOH/KOtBu combination, and HCOOH/Et3N (5:2) azeotropic mixture. The HCOOH/Et3N (5:2) azeotropic mixture rotocol was found to be the best amon the three different h dro enation methods. Catalyst 1 hydrogenates imines chemoselectively over carbonyls under the reaction conditions. A range of aldehydes was reductively aminated to the corresponding secondary amines using the HCOOH/Et3N (5:2) azeotropic mixture. Further, catalyst 1 showed high efficiency for the reduction of a wide variety of N-heterocyclic imine derivatives. The lactam-lactim tautomerization of the ligand system is proposed for direct hydrogenation, whereas only the lactam form operates in the strongly basic medium (iPrOH/KOtBu). Under HCOOH/Et3N (5:2) conditions, the lactam scaffold is not protonated; rather, an outer-sphere hydride transfer from formate to the Ir is proposed, which is supported by 1H NMR and DFT calculations. Finally, ligand-promoted hydride transfer from metal-hydride to the protonated imine affords the corresponding amine. A close agreement between the experimentally estimated and computed thermodynamic/kinetic parameters gives credence to the metal-ligand cooperative mechanism for the imine hydrogenation reaction using the HCOOH/Et3N (5:2) azeotropic mixture.

- Ruthenium N-Heterocyclic Carbene Complexes for Chemoselective Reduction of Imines and Reductive Amination of Aldehydes and Ketones
-
Chemoselective reduction of imines to secondary amines is catalyzed efficiently by tethered and untethered, half-sandwich ruthenium N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes at room temperature. The untethered Ru-NHC complexes are more efficient as catalysts for the reduction of aldimines and ketimines than the tethered complexes. Using the best untethered complex as a catalyst, electronic and steric demands on the reaction was probed using a series of imines. Chemoselectivity of the catalyst towards imine reduction was tested by performing inter and intramolecular competitive reactions in a variety of ways. The catalyst exhibits a very high TON and TOF under anaerobic conditions.

- Direct electrochemical reductive amination between aldehydes and amines with a H/D-donor solvent
-
A novel electrochemical synthesis protocol has been achieved for reductive amination between aldehydes and amines in undivided cells at room temperature. Under metal-free and external-reductant-free electrolysis conditions, various important secondary amine products are obtained in moderate-to-high yields. Deuterium-labeling experiments have demonstrated that low-toxicity DMSO acts both as a solvent and a H-donor in the reaction. On this basis, various deuterium-labeled products with good-to-excellent D-incorporation have been synthesized by using DMSO-d6 as a solvent. Furthermore, a molecule with GR-antagonistic activity has been synthesized through further sulfonylation.

- Diethylsilane as a Powerful Reagent in Au Nanoparticle-Catalyzed Reductive Transformations
-
Diethylsilane (Et2SiH2), a simple and readily available dihydrosilane, that exhibits superior reactivity, as compared to monohydrosilanes, in a series of reductive transformations catalyzed by recyclable and reusable Au nanoparticles (1 mol-%) supported on TiO2. It reduces aldehydes or ketones almost instantaneously at ambient conditions. It can be used in a one pot rapid reductive amination procedure, in which premixing of aldehyde and amine is required prior to the addition of the reducing agent and the catalyst, even in a protic solvent. An unprecedented method for the synthesis of N-arylisoindolines is also shown in the reductive amination between o-phthalaldehyde and anilines. In this transformation, it is proposed that the intermediate N,2-diphenylisoindolin-1-imines are reduced stepwise to the isoindolines. Finally, Et2SiH2 readily reduces amides into amines in excellent yields and shorter reaction times relative to previously known analogous nano Au(0)-catalyzed protocols.

- Efficient photocatalytic one-pot hydrogenation and N-alkylation of nitrobenzenes/benzonitriles with alcohols over Pd/MOFs: Effect of the crystal morphology & “quasi-MOF” structure
-
One-pot multi-step reactions over visible-light induced catalysis feature the sustainable green process. Here, ligand structure change and 2-MI coordinated modulation were adapted to adjust the crystal size, morphology and crystalline structure of Fe-MOFs; double solvent impregnation was employed for the Pd loading; “quasi-MOF” materials with retained morphology were formed with calcination under N2. Above modified materials were employed as multifunctional photocatalysts for highly efficient one-pot hydrogenation and N-alkylation of nitrobenzenes or benzonitriles with alcohols after in situ Pd photoreduction. Photocatalytic performance was evidently affected by the Fe-MOFs crystal size, morphology, crystalline structure alteration and “quasi-MOF” construction. One-pot hydrogenation and N-alkylation of benzonitriles with alcohols was achieved with excellent catalytic performance firstly in heteroegeneous catalysis. Reaction mechanism was proposed with the assistance of in situ DRIFTS.

- Ruthenium(II) Complexes of Heteroditopic N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands: Efficient Catalysts for C-N Bond Formation via a Hydrogen-Borrowing Strategy under Solvent-Free Conditions
-
Both imidazol-2-ylidene (ImNHC) and 1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene (tzNHC) have evolved to be elite groups of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands for homogeneous catalysis. To develop efficient ruthenium(II)-based catalysts incorporating these ligands for C-N bond-forming reactions via hydrogen-borrowing methodology, we utilized chelating ligands integrated with ImNHC and mesoionic tzNHC donors connected via a CH2 spacer with a diverse triazole backbone. The synthesized ruthenium(II) complexes 3 are found to be highly efficient for C-N bond formation across a wide range of primary amine and alcohol substrates under solvent-free conditions, and among all of the complexes studied here, catalyst 3a with a mesityl substituent displayed maximum activity. To our delight, catalyst 3a is also effective for the selective mono-N-methylation of various anilines utilizing methanol as a coupling partner, known to be relatively more difficult than other alcohols. Furthermore, complex 3a also delivers various substituted quinolines successfully via the reaction of 2-aminobenzyl alcohol with several secondary alcohols. Importantly, catalyst 3a exhibited the highest activity among the reported ruthenium(II) complexes for both the N-benzylation of aniline [achieving a turnover number (TON) of 50000] and the realization of quinoline 8a by reacting 2-aminobenzyl alcohol with 2-phenylethanol (attaining a TON of 30000).

- Synthesis and Reactivity of Fluorinated Triaryl Aluminum Complexes
-
The addition of the Grignard 3,4,5-ArFMgBr to aluminum(III) chloride in ether generates the novel triarylalane Al(3,4,5-ArF)3·OEt2. Attempts to synthesize this alane via transmetalation from the parent borane with trimethylaluminum gave a dimeric structure with bridging methyl groups, a product of partial transmetalation. On the other hand, the novel alane Al(2,3,4-ArF)3 was synthesized from the parent borane and trimethylaluminum. Interestingly, the solid-state structure of Al(2,3,4-ArF)3 shows an extended chain structure resulting from neighboring Al···F contacts. Al(3,4,5-ArF)3·OEt2 was then found to be an effective catalyst for the hydroboration of carbonyls, imines, and alkynes with pinacolborane.
