- Selective and highly efficient synthesis of xanthenedione or tetraketone derivatives catalyzed by ZnO nanorod-decorated graphene oxide
-
ZnO nanorod-decorated graphene oxide (GO/ZnO), containing Lewis and Bronsted acid centers, was introduced as a selective, highly efficient and recoverable nanocatalyst for the pseudo three-component synthesis of diverse tetraketone or xanthenedione derivatives via condensation of aromatic aldehydes with 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds in short reaction times and good to excellent yields in H2O under refluxing and solvent-free conditions, respectively. Moreover, the GO/ZnO nanocomposite was recovered and reused at least four times without a significant decrease in its activity. Low loading of the catalyst, high to excellent yields, the elimination of any toxic heavy metals or corrosive reagents for modification of the catalyst, simple separation and purification of the products, and the reusability of the catalyst are the most significant advantages of this green protocol. -
Nano-zirconia-supported sulfonic acid [nano-ZrO2-SO3H (n-ZrSA)] is synthesized by immobilizing sulfonic acid groups on the surface of nano zirconium dioxide to produce a novel heterogeneous reusable solid acid nanocatalyst. This new nanocatalyst is characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the Hammett acidity function and pH analysis. The introduced nano-zirconia-supported sulfonic acid is used as an efficient and recyclable catalyst for different heterocyclic multicomponent reactions such as the synthesis of hexahydroquinoline, 1,8-dioxo-decahydroacridine, polyhydroquinoline and 1,8-dioxo-octahydroxanthene derivatives. Optimization of the reaction conditions was studied using a central composite design (CCD) which is one of the most widely used response surface methodologies. The newly prepared heterogeneous solid acid nanocatalyst is easily separated and reusable for five cycles without any apparent loss of its catalytic activity, which confirmed the stability of the covalent bonding of the sulfonic acid groups. n-ZrSA has advantages such as its low cost, low toxicity, ease of preparation, good stability, high reusability and operational simplicity.

Nano-WO3-supported sulfonic acid [n-WO3-SO3H (n-WSA)] is easily prepared from the reaction of nano WO3 with chlorosulfonic acid as sulfonating agent. This new catalyst is characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), FT-IR spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), pH analysis and Hammett acidity function. Nano-WO3-supported sulfonic acid is used as an efficient and recyclable catalyst for some organic reactions such as synthesis of 1,8-dioxo-octahydroxanthene, tetrahydrobenzoxanthene and benzimidazolo quinazolinone derivatives. All of the reactions are very fast and the yields are excellent. The used catalyst was easily separated and reused for 10 runs without appreciable loss of its catalytic activity.

1,8-Dioxo-octahydro-xanthenes are easily prepared via the condensation of aldehydes with 1,3-cyclohexadione and/or dimedone using N-sulfonated DABCO as a new and efficient catalyst. This reagent is also efficiently able to catalyze the condensation of aldehydes with barbituric acid leading to 5-arylmethylene-pyrimidine-2,4,6-triones. The structure of the products was characterized by their IR, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The present methodology offers several advantages such as ease of preparation and handling of the catalyst, high yields, simple and green procedure, low cost, short reaction times, easy work-up, and preformation of the reaction in the absence of solvent or in water as a green solvent.
