- Origins of Catalyst Inhibition in the Manganese-Catalysed Oxidation of Lignin Model Compounds with H2O2
-
The upgrading of complex bio-renewable feedstock, such as lignocellulose, through depolymerisation benefits from the selective reactions at key functional groups. Applying homogeneous catalysts developed for selective organic oxidative transformations to complex feedstock such as lignin is challenged by the presence of interfering components. The selection of appropriate model compounds is essential in applying new catalytic systems and identifying such interferences. Here, it was shown by using as an example the oxidation of a model substrate containing a β-O-4 linkage with H2O2 and an in situ-prepared manganese-based catalyst, capable of efficient oxidation of benzylic alcohols, that interference from compounds liberated during the reaction can prevent its application to lignocellulose depolymerisation.

- Rapid, chemoselective and mild oxidation protocol for alcohols and ethers with recyclable N-chloro-N-(phenylsulfonyl)benzenesulfonamide
-
Chlorine is the 20th most abundant element on the earth compared to bromine, iodine, and fluorine, a sulfonimide reagent, N-chloro-N-(phenylsulfonyl)benzenesulfonamide (NCBSI) was identified as a mild and selective oxidant. Without activation, the reagent was proved to oxidize primary and secondary alcohols as well as their symmetrical and mixed ethers to corresponding aldehydes and ketones. With recoverable PS-TEMPO catalyst, selective oxidation over chlorination of primary and secondary alcohols and their ethers with electron-donating substituents was achieved. The reagent precursor of NCBSI was recovered quantitatively and can be reused for synthesizing NCBSI.

- Visible light mediated selective oxidation of alcohols and oxidative dehydrogenation of N-heterocycles using scalable and reusable La-doped NiWO4nanoparticles
-
Visible light-mediated selective and efficient oxidation of various primary/secondary benzyl alcohols to aldehydes/ketones and oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of partially saturated heterocycles using a scalable and reusable heterogeneous photoredox catalyst in aqueous medium are described. A systematic study led to a selective synthesis of aldehydes under an argon atmosphere while the ODH of partially saturated heterocycles under an oxygen atmosphere resulted in very good to excellent yields. The methodology is atom economical and exhibits excellent tolerance towards various functional groups, and broad substrate scope. Furthermore, a one-pot procedure was developed for the sequential oxidation of benzyl alcohols and heteroaryl carbinols followed by the Pictet-Spengler cyclization and then aromatization to obtain the β-carbolines in high isolated yields. This methodology was found to be suitable for scale up and reusability. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the oxidation of structurally diverse aryl carbinols and ODH of partially saturated N-heterocycles using a recyclable and heterogeneous photoredox catalyst under environmentally friendly conditions.

- Selective aerobic oxidation of benzylic and allylic alcohols catalyzed by Cu(OAc)2/TEMPO/Et2NH
-
Selective oxidation of benzylic and allylic alcohols to their corresponding aldehyde/ketone derivative without affecting saturated alcohols is still a challenging endeavor in organic synthesis. Various metal complexes, especially the copper complexes in the presence of TEMPO are being used very often for such transformations under aerobic conditions, but they are not selective to allylic and benzylic alcohols. The use of copper salt for oxidation of alcohols in the absence of a ligand are very scarcely studied except for the one catalyzed by CuCl/TEMPO where chloride inhibition and lack of selective oxidation have been noted upon use of CuCl2. Herein we report a Cu(OAc)2 catalyzed and TEMPO mediated selective aerobic oxidation of benzylic and allylic alcohols to aldehyde/ketone in the presence of Et2NH. The method avoids pre-synthesis of the catalyst as in the case of Cu(II)/(I) complexes/TEMPO catalyzed oxidation reactions, requires low catalyst loading, employs cheaper copper salt, and gives excellent selectivity for oxidation of benzylic and allylic alcohols.

A new magnetically recoverable catalyst consisting of phenanthroline Cu(II) complex supported on nickel ferrite nanoparticles was prepared. The synthesized catalyst was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission and scanning electron microscopes, thermogravimetry, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry and inductively coupled plasma. Supported copper complex used for solvent free oxidation of 1- phenyl ethanol as a model. Influence of the reaction parameters (kind of oxidant, amount of the catalyst, reaction time, solvent and reaction temperature) were studied. Because of the immobilized complex has been shown to be an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the selective oxidation of 1-phenyl ethanol to acetophenone (94% yield) by hydrogen peroxide so this green approach extended to other benzylic alcohols. The catalyst had been reused 10 times with no significant loss of catalytic activity. SEM, EDX, XRD, and ICP analysis of reused catalyst indicated that the catalyst was stable after the reaction.

- Structural elucidation, DFT calculations and catalytic activity of dioxomolybdenum(VI) complexes with N–N donor ligand: Role of halogen atom coordinated to the molybdenum centre
-
Two new isostructural mononuclear dioxomolybdenum(VI) complexes of the formula MoO2X2L [where, X = Cl (1), Br (2)] have been synthesized with a N–N donor 2-(3-methyl-5-phenyl pyrazol-1-yl) benzthiazole ligand (L). The reaction is carried out in open air and the MoVO3+ centre in the precursor molecule, MoOX3L undergoes spontaneous aerial oxidation, leading to the formation of molybdenum(VI) complexes 1 and 2. The complexes are characterized by a wide range of spectroscopic techniques (IR, UV–Vis and 1H NMR) and elemental analyses. Crystal structures of the ligand and complexes 1 and 2 have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction which reveal a distorted octahedral geometry around the molybdenum(VI) centre in both the complexes. The ligand and the complexes build up fascinating supramolecular assembly via several non-covalent interactions including hydrogen bonding, C–H···π and π···π interactions. Further, a detailed study of Hirshfeld surface analysis and fingerprint plots of complexes 1 and 2 are presented for understanding the intermolecular interactions involved in building self-assembled frameworks. Supportive DFT and TD-DFT calculations have also been carried out. Electrochemical properties of the complexes have been examined by cyclic voltammetry. Catalytic performance of the synthesized complexes has been evaluated for the oxidation of different olefins in the presence of hydrogen peroxide.

- Bioproduction of Enantiopure (R)- and (S)-2-Phenylglycinols from Styrenes and Renewable Feedstocks
-
Enantiopure (R)- and (S)-2-phenylglycinols are important chiral building blocks for pharmaceutical manufacturing. Several chemical and enzymatic methods for their synthesis were reported, either involving multi-step synthesis or starting from a relatively complex chemical. Here, we developed one-pot simple syntheses of enantiopure (R)- and (S)-2-phenylglycinols from cheap starting materials and renewable feedstocks. Enzyme cascades consisting of epoxidation-hydrolysis-oxidation-transamination were developed to convert styrene 2 a to (R)- and (S)-2-phenylglycinol 1 a, with butanediol dehydrogenase for alcohol oxidation as well as BmTA and NfTA for (R)- and (S)-enantioselective transamination, respectively. The engineered E. coli strains expressing the cascades produced 1015 mg/L (R)-1 a in >99% ee and 315 mg/L (S)-1 a in 91% ee, respectively, from styrene 2 a. The same cascade also converted substituted styrenes 2 b–k and indene 2 l into substituted (R)-phenylglycinols 1 b–k and (1R, 2R)-1-amino-2-indanol 1 l in 95–>99% ee. To transform bio-based L-phenylalanine 6 to (R)-1 a and (S)-1 a, (R)- and (S)-enantioselective enzyme cascades for deamination-decarboxylation-epoxidation-hydrolysis-oxidation-transamination were developed. The engineered E. coli strains produced (R)-1 a and (S)-1 a in high ee at 576 mg/L and 356 mg/L, respectively, from L-phenylalanine 6, as the first synthesis of these compounds from a bio-based chemical. Finally, L-phenylalanine biosynthesis pathway was combined with (R)- or (S)-enantioselective cascade in one strain or coupled strains, to achieve the first synthesis of (R)-1 a and (S)-1 a from a renewable feedstock. The coupled strain approach enhanced the production, affording 274 and 384 mg/L (R)-1 a and 274 and 301 mg/L (S)-1 a, from glucose and glycerol, respectively. The developed methods could be potentially useful to produce these high-value chemicals from cheap starting materials and renewable feedstocks in a green and sustainable manner. (Figure presented.).

- Enantioselective Cascade Biocatalysis for Deracemization of Racemic β-Amino Alcohols to Enantiopure (S)-β-Amino Alcohols by Employing Cyclohexylamine Oxidase and ω-Transaminase
-
Optically active β-amino alcohols are very useful chiral intermediates frequently used in the preparation of pharmaceutically active substances. Here, a novel cyclohexylamine oxidase (ArCHAO) was identified from the genome sequence of Arthrobacter sp. TYUT010-15 with the R-stereoselective deamination activity of β-amino alcohol. ArCHAO was cloned and successfully expressed in E. coli BL21, purified and characterized. Substrate-specific analysis revealed that ArCHAO has high activity (4.15 to 6.34 U mg?1 protein) and excellent enantioselectivity toward the tested β-amino alcohols. By using purified ArCHAO, a wide range of racemic β-amino alcohols were resolved, (S)-β-amino alcohols were obtained in >99 % ee. Deracemization of racemic β-amino alcohols was conducted by ArCHAO-catalyzed enantioselective deamination and transaminase-catalyzed enantioselective amination to afford (S)-β-amino alcohols in excellent conversion (78–94 %) and enantiomeric excess (>99 %). Preparative-scale deracemization was carried out with 50 mM (6.859 g L?1) racemic 2-amino-2-phenylethanol, (S)-2-amino-2-phenylethanol was obtained in 75 % isolated yield and >99 % ee.

- One-Pot Enzymatic-Chemical Cascade Route for Synthesizing Aromatic α-Hydroxy Ketones
-
2-Hydroxyacetophenone (2-HAP) is an important building block for the production of a series of natural products and pharmaceuticals; however, there is no safe, efficient, and economical method for 2-HAP synthesis. Here, a one-pot enzymatic-chemical cascade route was designed for synthesizing 2-HAP based on retrosynthetic analysis. First, a spontaneous proton-transfer reaction was designed using a computational simulation that enabled 2-HAP synthesis from the isomer 2-hydroxy-2-phenylacetaldehyde. A route for 2-hydroxy-2-phenylacetaldehyde synthesis was then constructed by introducing the unnatural substrate glyoxylic acid into a C-C ligation reaction catalyzed by Candida tropicalis pyruvate decarboxylase. Assembly and optimization of this enzymatic-chemical cascade route resulted in a final yield of 92.7%. Furthermore, stereospecific carbonyl reductases were introduced to construct a synthetic application platform that enabled further transformation of 2-HAP into (S)- and (R)-1-phenyl-1,2-ethanediol. This method of cascading spontaneous chemical and enzymatic reactions to synthesize chemicals offers insight into avenues for synthesizing other valuable chemicals.

- Design and synthesis of a versatile cooperative catalytic aerobic oxidation system with co-immobilization of palladium nanoparticles and laccase into the cavities of MCF
-
We have designed a versatile reusable cooperative catalyst oxidation system, consisting of palladium nanoparticles and laccase with unprecedented reactivity. This biohybrid catalyst was synthesized by the stepwise immobilization of laccase as an enzyme and Pd as a nanometallic component into the same cavity of siliceous mesocellular foams (MCF). MCF and nanobiohybrid catalyst were characterized by BET, SAXS, SEM, EDX elemental mapping, ICP-OES, TEM, TGA, FT-IR, and XPS techniques and the stepwise immobilization of laccase enzyme and Pd onto MCF was evaluated through several compelling electrochemical studies. The present catalytic system exhibits high activity toward (i) aerobic oxidation of alcohols to the corresponding carbonyl compounds, (ii) aerobic oxidation of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone to phenol and (iii) aerobic dehydrogenation of important N-heteocyclic compounds (tetrahydro quinazolines, quinazolonones, pyrazolines and 1,4-diydropyridines) in the presence of catalytic amount of hydroquinone (HQ) as mediator in phosphate buffer (0.1 M, pH 4.5, 4 mL)/THF (4%, 1 mL) as solvent under mild conditions. The immobilization of both oxygen-activating catalyst (laccase) and oxidizing catalyst (Pd) onto the same support makes the present catalyst system superior to other currently available heterogeneous palladium based catalytic aerobic oxidation systems.

- Pd-Catalyzed Decarboxylative Olefination: Stereoselective Synthesis of Polysubstituted Butadienes and Macrocyclic P-glycoprotein Inhibitors
-
The efficient and stereoselective synthesis of polysubstituted butadienes, especially the multifunctional butadienes, represents a great challenge in organic synthesis. Herein, we wish to report a distinctive Pd(0) carbene-initiated decarboxylative olefination approach that enables the direct coupling of diazo esters with vinylethylene carbonates (VECs), vinyl oxazolidinones, or vinyl benzoxazinones to afford alcohol-, amine-, or aniline-containing 1,3-dienes in moderate to high yields and with excellent stereoselectivity. This protocol features operational simplicity, mild reaction conditions, a broad substrate scope, and gram-scalability. Notably, a structurally unique allylic Pd(II) intermediate was isolated and characterized. DFT calculation and control experiments demonstrated that a rare Pd(0) carbene intermediate could be involved in this reaction. Moreover, the polysubstituted butadienes as novel building blocks were unprecedentedly assembled into macrocycles, which efficiently inhibited the P-glycoprotein and dramatically reversed multidrug resistance in cancer cells by 190-fold.

- Catalytic oxidation of alcohols and alkyl benzenes to carbonyls using Fe3O4?SiO2?(TEMPO)-: Co -(Chlorophyll-CoIII) as a bi-functional, self-co-oxidant nanocatalyst
-
Chlorophyll b was extracted from heliotropium europaeum plant, demetalated, allylated and grafted to acrylated TEMPO through a copolymerization protocol. Then, the chlorophyll monomers were coordinated to Co ions, immobilized on magnetic nanoparticles and the resulting hybrid was used as a powerful catalyst for a variety of oxidation reactions. By using the present method, oxidation of benzylic alcohols and alkyl benzenes to carbonyls was accomplished in water under aerobic conditions. Moreover, direct oxidation of alcohols to carboxylic acids was performed by adding NaOCl to the mixture. All entries were oxidized to the corresponding desired product with high to excellent yields and up to 97% selectivity. The catalyst was thoroughly characterized by CV, TGA, VSM, XRD, XPS, DLS, FE-SEM, TEM, UV-Vis, EDX, and BET analyses. The activity of the catalyst was investigated by applying various components of the catalyst to the oxidation model separately. The reasonable mechanisms are suggested based on the cooperation between the TEMPO groups and cobalt(iii) (or Co(iv)) sites on the catalyst. The catalyst could be recovered and reused for at least 7 consecutive recycles without any considerable reactivity loss. This journal is

- Enantiocomplementary C–H Bond Hydroxylation Combining Photo-Catalysis and Whole-Cell Biocatalysis in a One-Pot Cascade Process
-
Enantiocomplementary hydroxylation of alkyl aromatics through a one-pot photo-biocatalytic cascade reaction is described. The photoredox process is implemented in aqueous phase with O2 as oxidant and the subsequent (R)- or (S)-selective bioreduction is performed by whole cell system without the addition of the expensive cofactor (NADPH). This mild, operationally simple protocol transforms a wide variety of readily available aromatic compounds into valuable chiral alcohols with high yield (up to 90 %) and stereoselectivity (up to 99 %), thereby displaying important potentials in organic synthesis.

- Donor-Flexible Bis(pyridylidene amide) Ligands for Highly Efficient Ruthenium-Catalyzed Olefin Oxidation
-
An exceptionally efficient ruthenium-based catalyst for olefin oxidation has been designed by exploiting N,N′-bis(pyridylidene)oxalamide (bisPYA) as a donor-flexible ligand. The dynamic donor ability of the bisPYA ligand, imparted by variable zwitterionic and neutral resonance structure contributions, paired with the redox activity of ruthenium provided catalytic activity for Lemieux–Johnson-type oxidative cleavage of olefins to efficiently prepare ketones and aldehydes. The ruthenium bisPYA complex significantly outperforms state-of-the-art systems and displays extraordinary catalytic activity in this oxidation, reaching turnover frequencies of 650 000 h?1 and turnover numbers of several millions.

- Aerobic Oxidation of Secondary Alcohols with Nitric Acid and Iron(III) Chloride as Catalysts in Fluorinated Alcohol
-
Fluorinated alcohols as solvents strongly influence and direct chemical reaction through donation of strong hydrogen bonds while being weak acceptors. We used 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP) as the activating solvent for a nitric acid and FeCl3-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of secondary alcohols to ketones. Reaction proceeded selectively with excellent yields with no reaction on the primary alcohol group. Oxidation of benzyl alcohols proceeds selectively to aldehydes with only HNO3 as the catalyst, while reaction on tertiary alcohols proceeds through dehydration and dimerization. A mechanistic study showed in situ formation of NOCl that converts alcohol into alkyl nitrite, which in the presence of Fe3+ ions and fluorinated alcohol decomposes into ketone. The study indicates that iron(III) acts also as the single-electron transfer catalyst in regeneration of NOCl reactive species.

- H2-Generation from Alcohols by the MOF-Based Noble Metal-Free Photocatalyst Ni/CdS/TiO2@MIL-101
-
The synthesis of important classes of chemical compounds from alcohols helps to conserve Earth's fossil carbon resources, since alcohols can be obtained from indigestible and abundantly available biomass. The utilisation of visible light for the activation of alcohols permits alcohol-based C-N and C-C bond formation under mild conditions inaccessible with thermally operating hydrogen liberation catalysts. Herein, we report on a noble metal-free photocatalyst able to split alcohols into hydrogen and carbonyl compounds under inert gas atmosphere without the requirement of electron donors, additives, or aqueous reaction media. The reusable photocatalyst mediates C-N multiple bond formation using the oxidation of alcohols and subsequent coupling with amines. The photocatalyst consists of a CdS/TiO2 heterojunction decorated with co-catalytic Ni nanoparticles and is prepared on size-optimised colloidal metal-organic framework (MOF) crystallites.

- Efficient and selective oxidation of alcohols to carbonyl compounds at room temperature by a ruthenium complex catalyst and hydrogen peroxide
-
In this study, convenient and selective oxidation of alcohols using aqueous hydrogen peroxide to yield carbonyl compounds was studied. Using the ruthenium-(4-methylphenyl-2,6-bispydinyl) pyridinedicarboxylate complex [Ru(mpbp)(pydic)] as a catalyst, primary and secondary alcohols were oxidized to aldehydes and ketones at room temperature with a satisfactory yield and excellent selectivity. The influence of various reaction parameters, such as solvent, catalyst and oxidant amount on both the activity and selectivity was also evaluated. Kinetic studies showed that the oxidation of alcohol was first order in terms of the substrate and hydrogen peroxide, and was second order in terms of the catalyst. A plausible mechanism involving ruthenium-oxo species with electrophilic character was proposed based on the in situ UV-vis spectroscopy studies and Hammett plots.

- One Pot Asymmetric Synthesis of (R)-Phenylglycinol from Racemic Styrene Oxide via Cascade Biocatalysis
-
(R)-Phenylglycinol is an important chiral building block for pharmaceutical and fine chemical industry, and its efficient synthesis from cheap and commercially available starting materials is challenging and highly desirable. Herein, a new three-step one-pot cascade system employing epoxide hydrolase, glycerol dehydrogenase, and ω-transaminase was designed for the asymmetric synthesis of (R)-phenylglycinol from racemic styrene oxide. A cofactor self-sufficient system employing AlaDH/L?Ala was utilized for the regeneration of expensive cofactor NAD+ and removal of by-product pyruvate. Furthermore, in situ product removal by cation resin adsorption was used to drive the thermodynamic equilibrium of the cascade reaction to the direction of product generation. Finally, optically pure (R)-phenylglycinol was successfully produced from racemic styrene oxide with high yield (81.9 %) and excellent enantioselectivity (99 % ee).

A facile method for the one-pot synthesis of 1,2-diarylindoles under transition-metal-free conditions is described. Cyclohexanones were used as the aryl sources via the dehydrogenative aromatization process. One C-C and two C-N bonds were selectively formed via a domino reaction. This protocol provides a convenient approach for the construction of valuable bioactive 1,2-diarylindoles from readily available cyclohexanones, α-hydroxyketones and anilines.

- Vinylethylene Carbonates as α,β-Unsaturated Aldehyde Surrogates for Regioselective [3 + 3] Cycloaddition
-
Herein, we report a novel stepwise addition-controlled ring size method, to access tetrahydropyrimidines through an operationally simple [3 + 3] cycloaddition of vinylethylene carbonates with triazinanes. Interestingly, we could also use this method for a [3 + 3] oxidative cycloaddition, which allows the facile synthesis of polysubstituted terphenyls under mild conditions. Mechanistic studies suggest that vinylethylene carbonates could generate α,β-unsaturated aldehydes as 3-carbon synthons for cycloaddition via a combination process of Pd-catalyzed decarboxylation and β-H elimination.

Transition-metal-catalyzed C-H activation synthesis of heterocyclic spiro[4,4]nonanes has persistently witnessed the use of additional stoichiometric transition-metal oxidant when employing C=C bond as the spiro ring closure site. Herein, we have addressed the issue by reporting a redox-neutral strategy for spiro[indene-1,4′-oxa-zolidinones] synthesis via Rh(III)-catalyzed coupling of 4-phenyl-1,3-oxazol-2(3H)-ones with alkynes. The synthesis features a broad substrate scope and high regiospecificity.

- Rapid and Quantitative Profiling of Substrate Specificity of ω-Transaminases for Ketones
-
ω-Transaminases (ω-TAs) have gained growing attention owing to their capability for asymmetric synthesis of chiral amines from ketones. Reliable high-throughput activity assay of ω-TAs is essential in carrying out extensive substrate profiling and establishing a robust screening platform. Here we report spectrophotometric and colorimetric methods enabling rapid quantitation of ω-TA activities toward ketones in a 96-well microplate format. The assay methods employ benzylamine, a reactive amino donor for ω-TAs, as a cosubstrate and exploit aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) as a reporter enzyme, leading to formation of benzaldehyde detectable by ALDH owing to concomitant NADH generation. Spectrophotometric substrate profiling of two wild-type ω-TAs of opposite stereoselectivity was carried out at 340 nm with 22 ketones, revealing subtle differences in substrate specificities that were consistent with docking simulation results obtained with cognate amines. Colorimetric readout for naked eye detection of the ω-TA activity was also demonstrated by supplementing the assay mixture with color-developing reagents whose color reaction could be quantified at 580 nm. The colorimetric assay was applied to substrate profiling of an engineered ω-TA for 24 ketones, leading to rapid identification of reactive ketones. The ALDH-based assay is expected to be promising for high-throughput screening of enzyme collections and mutant libraries to fish out the best ω-TA candidate as well as to tailor enzyme properties for efficient amination of a target ketone.

- Palladium-Catalyzed Diastereoselective Formal [5 + 3] Cycloaddition for the Construction of Spirooxindoles Fused with an Eight-Membered Ring
-
A Pd-catalyzed formal [5 + 3] intermolecular cycloaddition reaction of isatin-derived α-(trifluoromethyl)imines with aryl substituted vinylethylene carbonates (VECs) has been reported, affording trifluoromethyl-group-containing spirooxindoles fused with an eight-membered ring as a single diastereoisomer in good yields in the presence of a Br?nsted acid in a one-pot manner under mild conditions. The asymmetric version of this reaction has been also realized using a chiral phosphine ligand along with the further transformation of the obtained product to give a spirooxindolo pyrrolidine derivative upon oxidation.

Tertiary propargylic sulfones are of significant importance in organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry, but to date no general asymmetric synthesis approach has been developed. We disclose a versatile copper-catalyzed sulfonylation of propargylic cyclic carbonates using sodium sulfinates that allows the construction of propargylic sulfones featuring elusive quaternary stereocenters. This method provides the first successful example of such an enantioselective propargylic sulfonylation, features high asymmetric induction, wide functional group tolerance, and scalability, and enables attractive product diversification.

- Gold nanoparticles stabilized by graphene quantum dots as catalysts for C–C bond cleavage in β-O-4 lignin model compounds
-
In this work, we report oxidative cleavage of C–C bonds in β-O-4 lignin models that is catalyzed by gold nanoparticles stabilized by graphene quantum dots (AuNPs-GQDs). We demonstrate that GQDs can enhance the catalytic activity of AuNPs. The AuNPs-GQDs shows the highest catalytic activity when the mass ratio of AuNPs to GQDs is of 1:18. Moreover, AuNPs-GQDs exhibits higher activity in the cleavage of Cα–Cβ bond of the compounds when their Cβ is adjacent to an oxygen atom. The possible oxidation pathway is proposed.

- Dimethyl Sulfoxide Oxygen Donor-Based Annulation of Ketones and Ammonium Persulfate: Regioselective Synthesis of 2,4-disubstituted Oxazoles
-
An efficient protocol for the synthesis of substituted oxazoles via an annulation of ketones, DMSO, and ammonium is reported. DMSO is first found to serve as oxygen donor in annulation resulting in regioselective synthesis of 2,4-disubstituted oxazoles. With the optimized conditions in hand, 22 examples of 2,4-disubstituted oxazoles are obtained from readily available substrates. The protocol can be also applied in cross-condensation reactions between methyl ketones and non-methyl ketones resulting 4 examples of 2,4,5-trisubstituted oxazoles. Moreover, we have successfully applied the protocol into gram-scale representing good yields, that showing the potential practicality in organic synthesis. Based on control experiments and literature, a plausible reaction mechanism was proposed in our work. (Figure presented.).

- Enantiocomplementary decarboxylative hydroxylation combining photocatalysis and whole-cell biocatalysis in a one-pot cascade process
-
Designing a green, highly efficient and stereoselective catalytic system to generate valuable enantioenriched products is a long-standing goal in green chemistry. Here, we report a one-pot cascade combining photocatalysts with (R)- or (S)-selective ketoreductases for the decarboxylative carbonylation of carboxylic acids and the subsequent bioreduction to generate valuable chiral alcohols. Using this approach, various chiral alcohols with complementary (R)- or (S)-configurations were prepared with good yields (up to 93%) and excellent stereoselectivity (up to 99% ee). Such a photochemo-enzymatic one-pot whole-cell process combines the advantages of both photocatalysts and enzyme catalysts and provides a mild, green, metal-free and highly stereoselective alternative in asymmetric decarboxylative hydroxylation reactions.

- Polymer-anchored mononuclear and binuclear CuII Schiff-base complexes: Impact of heterogenization on liquid phase catalytic oxidation of a series of alkenes
-
Liquid phase catalytic oxidation of a number of alkenes, for example, cyclohexene, cis-cyclooctene, styrene, 1-methyl cyclohexene and 1-hexene, was performed using polymer-anchored copper (II) complexes PS-[Cu (sal-sch)Cl] (5), PS-[Cu (sal-tch)Cl] (6), PS-[CH2{Cu (sal-sch)Cl}2] (7) and PS-[CH2{Cu (sal-tch)Cl}2] (8). Neat complexes [Cu (sal-sch)Cl] (1), [Cu (sal-tch)Cl] (2), [CH2{Cu (sal-sch)Cl}2] (3) and [CH2{Cu (sal-tch)Cl}2] (4) were isolated by reacting CuCl2·2H2O with [Hsal-sch] (I), [Hsal-tch] (II), [H2bissal-sch] (III) and [H2bissal-tch] (IV), respectively, in refluxing methanol. Complexes 1–4 have been covalently anchored in Merrifield resin through the amine nitrogen of the semicarbazide or thiosemicarbazide moiety. A number of analytical, spectroscopic and thermal techniques, such as CHNS analysis, Fourier transform-infrared, UV–Vis, PMR, 13C-NMR, electron paramagnetic resonance, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, atomic force microscopy, atomic absorption spectroscopy, and electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry, were used to analyze and establish the molecular structure of the ligands (I)–(IV) and complexes (1)–(8) in solid state as well as in solution state. Grafted complexes 5–8 were employed as active catalysts for the oxidation of a series of alkenes in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. Copper hydroperoxo species ([CuIII (sal-sch)-O-O-H]), which is believed to be the active intermediate, generated during the catalytic oxidation of alkenes, are identified. It was found that supported catalysts are very economical, green and efficient in contrast to their neat complexes as well as most of the recently reported heterogeneous catalysts.

- Photocatalytic Cleavage of Aryl Ether in Modified Lignin to Non-phenolic Aromatics
-
Depolymerization of lignin meets the difficulty in cleaving the robust aryl ether bond. Herein, through installing an internal nucleophile in the β-O-4′ linkage, the selective cleavage of aryl ether was realized by the intramolecular substitution on aryl rings affording non-phenolic arylamine products. In particular, nitrogen-modified lignin models and lignin samples were employed to generate the iminyl radical under photocatalytic reduction, which acted as the internal nucleophile inducing aryl migration from O to the N atom. The following hydrolysis released primary arylamines and α-hydroxy ketones. Mechanism studies including electron spin resonance (ESR), fluorescence quenching experiments, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations proved the aryl migration pathway. This method enables access to non-phenolic arylamine products from lignin conversion.

A mesoionic-nitrosotetrazolium-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of alcohols is reported. In the presence of catalytic amounts of 5-nitroso-1,3-diphenyltetrazolium tetrafluoroborate (5 mol-%) and nitric acid (20 mol-%), a wide range of alcohols are oxidized to the corresponding aldehydes and ketones in yields of 53–100 % at room temperature under ambient air or oxygen conditions. This oxidation shows a strong preference for secondary alcohols over primary alcohols; sterically hindered alcohols are also smoothly oxidized. A mechanism involving a nitroso/NOx catalytic cycle is proposed.

Bifunctional complexes bearing N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands functionalized with hydroxy or amine groups were synthesized to measure the beneficial effect of different modes of metal-ligand cooperation in the acceptorless dehydrogenation of alcohols. In comparison to complexes with an amine moiety, hydroxy-functionalized iridium catalysts showed superior activity. In contrast to alcohols, 1,4-diols underwent cyclization to give the corresponding tetrahydrofurans without involving dehydrogenation processes. Mechanistic investigations to rationalize the "OH effect" in these types of complexes have been undertaken.
