- ESTERIFICATION PROCESS
-
The present disclosure relates to a process of esterification in presence of a catalyst. The catalyst of the present disclosure is an aryloxy based phosphoric acid having general formula [{ArO}2P(O)OH] and is represented by the structure: wherein, Ar represents aryl compounds. The process of esterification is carried out by the reaction of a carboxylic acid and an alcohol in a fluid medium in the presence of the aryloxy based phosphoric acid catalyst resulting in the corresponding ester. The process of the present disclosure is simple and results in a product having a comparatively higher purity.

- Non-plasmonic metal nanoparticles as visible light photocatalysts for the selective oxidation of aliphatic alcohols with molecular oxygen at near ambient conditions
-
Nanoparticles (NPs) of Pd and Pt were used for the selective oxidation of aliphatic alcohols with molecular oxygen as an oxidant at near ambient temperatures under visible light irradiation. Distinct final products were obtained under identical reaction conditions, aliphatic esters formed over the Pd NPs while aldehydes formed over the Pt NPs. The reason for this different product selectivity is proven to be due to the much stronger interaction of Pd NPs with alcohol and aldehyde compared to Pt NPs. The photocatalytic activity is tuneable by light intensity or a moderate change in the reaction temperature.

- The Candida rugosa lipase adsorbed onto titania as nano biocatalyst with improved thermostability and reuse potential in aqueous and organic media
-
The immobilization of Candida rugosa lipase by adsorption was performed onto commercial titania powder (Degussa P25). The change of titania particles surface was diagnosed by means of FTIR and FESEM analysis, as well as by shift of zeta potential value towards that of lipase. A detailed study of the effect of immobilization on enzyme kinetic, temperature stability, as well as on potential for its reuse in aqueous organic media was undertaken. Immobilization of lipase altered enzyme affinity toward substrates with different length of carbon chain in hydrolytic reaction. The Vmax value decreased 2–8-fold, where major constraint was registered for the ester containing the longest carbon chain. Thermostability of lipase improved more than 7-fold at 60 °C. Significant potential for reuse in water solutions was also found after immobilization. In cyclohexane immobilized lipase catalyzed synthesis of amyl octanoate by ping-pong bi–bi mechanism with inhibition by amyl alcohol. Obtained kinetic constants were Vmax = 26.4 μmol min?1, KAc = 0.52 mol/L, KAl = 0.2 mol/L and Ki,Al = 0.644 mol/L. Esterification activity remained 60% after 5 reuse cycles in cyclohexane indicating moderate reuse stability.

- Appel reaction of carboxylic acids with tribromoisocyanuric acid/triphenylphosphine: A mild and acid-free preparation of esters and amides
-
A facile and efficient method for esterification and amidation of carboxylic acids under neutral conditions has been developed. Esters and amides can be prepared by reacting a carboxylic acid (1 mmol) with tribromoisocyanuric acid (0.37 mmol) and triphenylphosphine (1 mmol) in dichloromethane at room temperature, followed by addition of an alcohol or an amine, respectively.

- Use of Lecitase-Ultra immobilized on styrene-divinylbenzene beads as catalyst of esterification reactions: Effects of ultrasounds
-
Abstract In this work it was evaluated for the first time, the ester synthesis catalyzed by the phospholipase Lecitase-Ultra immobilized styrene-divinylbenzene beads (MCI-Lecitase), comparing the mechanical stirring and the ultrasonic energy. It was studied the specificity of the enzyme using carboxylic acids from C4 to C18, as well as the effects of alcohol chain, organic solvents, biocatalyst content, reaction temperature and substrate concentration. Caprylic and myristic acids were those with the highest reaction rates and yields, using ethanol as substrate. The shorter the alcohol chain, the higher the enzyme activity. Regarding the secondary alcohols, while MCI-Lecitase had no activity versus isopropanol, using 2-pentanol the activity was similar to that with 1-pentanol. Comparing the agitation systems, MCI-Lecitase presented an initial reaction rate more than 2-times higher in the ultrasound-assisted reaction than under traditional mechanical stirring. Moreover, under ultrasonic energy the maximum rate was achieved using 0.5 M of substrates, while under mechanical stirring the maximum enzyme activity was reached at 0.3 M of substrates. Concerning the operational stability, MCI-Lecitase was quite unstable, losing its activity after 6 reaction cycles. By adding molecular sieves in the reaction medium, MCI-Lecitase retained 30% of its initial activity after 6 cycles.

- Copper-catalyzed highly efficient ester formation from carboxylic acids/esters and formates
-
A highly efficient copper-catalyzed protocol for the synthesis of esters has been developed from formates. This protocol is applicable to reactions with either esters or acids as the substrates, and shows broad substrate scopes and high yields. This journal is the Partner Organisations 2014.

- Solvent-free esterification catalyzed by surfactant-combined catalysts at room temperature
-
Solvent-free esterifications of various carboxylic acids and alcohols can be catalyzed by surfactant-combined catalysts dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid (DBSA) and copper dodecylbenzene sulfonate (CDBS) in moderate to excellent yield at room temperature. The esterification method has two notable advantages: first, there is no need for any solvent, even water, and secondly, no need for energy, the reaction can proceed smoothly at room temperature.
