The copper(ii) metal-organic framework (MOF) [Cu(η-1κN,N′,N′′:2κO,O′-L)(NO3)]n (1) [L = 4-((4-([2,2′:6′,2′′-terpyridin]-4′-yl)benzyl)oxy)benzoate] has been synthesized from a flexible bifunctionalised terpyridine species (HL). It was characterized by elemental, FT-IR, powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Single crystal X-ray crystallography of 1 shows a 1D polymeric architecture, whose topological analysis illustrates a uninodal (2)-connected net having topological type 2C1. 1 shows good catalytic activity and selectivity towards the hydrocarboxylation of cyclohexane to cyclohexanecarboxylic acid in water/acetonitrile or water/ionic liquid [BMPyr][NTf2] [BMPyr = 1-butyl-1 methylpyrrolidinium; NTf2 = bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide] medium. It can be recycled and reused without any significant loss of catalytic efficiency. This study provides the first example of an efficient alkane hydrocarboxylation to carboxylic acid, in an ionic liquid and under mild conditions.

New hybrid materials have been prepared by the electrostatic interaction of these complexes with several oxidatively rugged solid supports such as SiO2, FTO-TiO2 and FTO-Nafion. - Chiral supramolecular frameworks based on chiral metallocycles: Crystal structures and photophysical properties
-
Four purely chiral supramolecular frameworks were constructed from a new chiral terpyridyl ligand, (S)-2{4-[2,6-bis(pyridin-2-yl)pyridin-4-yl] benzylamino}propanoic acid (H2ptpy). The resulting compounds 1-4, namely [Cd2(Hptpy)2(Ac)2]?3CH 3OH?H2O (1) [Ni2(Hptpy) 2(CH3OH)(H2O)](ClO4) 2?CH3OH?H2O (2), [Ni 2(Hptpy)2(H2O)2](SCN)2 (3), and [Cu2(Hptpy)2](dca)2?4H 2O (4) (Ac = acetate and dca = dicyanamide) all consist of those chiral metallocyclic units. As expected, those chiral nanometallocycles not only induced a chiral array or helicates but also amplified chirality through hydrogen-bonding interactions, and finally aggregated into complicated higher-dimensional chiral supramolecular architectures with chiral voids for further use. The formation of the metallocyclic units is easily monitored by UV/Vis spectra. Spectrophotometric titrations were performed by titrating Na(Hptpy) with a soltution of Cd(Ac)2 in methanol, and the global stability constants of [Cd2(Hptpy)2]2+ (logβ = 17.60) were calculated. In combination with the structural analyses and UV/Vis and ES mass spectra, it is tentatively deduced that metallocycle units in 1-4 are the thermodynamically favored species in solution. Both the chiral H2ptpy ligand and 1 in the solid state and in solution display purple emission. The bathochromic shift of 1 is mainly due to the bichelation and intrametallocyclic π-π interactions. By the self-assembly of the synthesized purely chiral terpyridyl ligand (S)-2{4-[2,6-bis(pyridin-2-yl) pyridin-4-yl]benzylamino}propanoic acid (H2ptpy) with metal ions, a new class of purely chiral metal-organic frameworks built from the chiral metallocyclic subunits formed by two chiral (Hptpy)- anions that bridge two metal ions in a head-to-tail style was prepared and characterized.

- Sulfur-containing terpyridine derivatives: Synthesis, coordination properties, and adsorption on the gold surface
-
Approaches to the synthesis of organic aurophilic ligands, viz., sulfur-containing 2,2′:6′,2'-terpyridine derivatives, were developed. Complexation reactions of the terpyridine ligands having thiophenol, diaryl disulfide, and alkyl aryl sulfide fragments with Co ii, Ni ii, and Rh iii salts were studied. The structures of the coordination compounds obtained were established based on the elemental analysis data, density functional calculations, and electron spectroscopy. The structure of the complex of 4′-(4-methylsulfanyl)-2,2′:6′,2-terpyridine with Ni(BF4)2 was also established by X-ray diffraction analysis. A method was proposed for the preparation of gold nanoparticle dimeric aggregates via coordination interactions of the ligands adsorbed on the gold nanoparticle surface with transition metal ions. A degree of nanoparticle aggregation upon their reaction with solutions of complex compounds of aurophilic nitrogen-containing ligands was determined by the concentration of the solution of the complex used.

- Long-Lived Photoinduced Charge Separation and Redox-Type Photochromism on Mesoporous Oxide Films Sensitized by Molecular Dyads
-
The photoinduced charge separation in three different assemblies composed of an electron donor D and a chromophore sensitizer S adsorbed on nanocrystalline TiO2 films (D-S|TiO2) was investigated. In all of the systems, the sensitizer was a ruthenium(II) bis-terpyridine complex anchored to the semiconductor surface by a phosphonate group. In two of the assemblies, the donor was a 4-(N,N-di-p-anisylamino) phenyl group linked to the 4′ position of the terpyridine, either directly (dyad D1-S) or via a benzyl ether interlocking group (dyad D2-S). In the third system, the sensitizer and the donor (3-(4-(N,N-di-p-anisylamino)phenoxy)-propyl-1-phosphonate) were coadsorbed on the surface ((D3+S)|TiO2). Laser flash photolysis showed that the photoinduced charge separation process follows the sequence D-S*|TiO2 1→ D-S+|(e-)TiO2 2→ D+-S|(e-)TiO2 3→ D-S|TiO2 Resonance Raman spectroscopy indicates that in the excited assemblies D2-S*|TiO2 and (D3+S*)|TiO2, one electron is promoted from the metal center to the terpyridine ligand linked to the semiconductor, whereas in the system D1-S*|TiO2 the excited electron is located on the ligand linked to the donor. The quantum yield of charge separation (steps 1 and 2) was found to be close to unity for the two former assemblies but only 60% for the latter one. In all three cases, the electron injection was very fast (++S)|(e-)TiO2, as in the model system S+|(e-)TiO2; it was 30 μs in D1+-S|(e-)TiO2 and 300 μs in D2+-S|(e-)TiO2. Electrodes made of any of the surface-confined dyads on conducting glass display a strong redox-type photochromism. When a positive potential (+0.5 V vs NHE) is applied to the electrode, charge recombination (step 3) is blocked. As a result, the visible absorption spectrum of the electrode changes, due to the appearance of the absorption feature of the oxidized donor (λmax = 730 nm). Return to the reduced state is achieved by electron injection through the conduction band of the TiO2 under forward bias (-0.5 V). None of the assemblies D1-S|TiO2 and D2-S|TiO2 gave better photovoltaic performances than the model system S|TiO2. This was attributed in the first case to the low injection efficiency and, in the second case, to an additional short-circuiting pathway constituted by the charge percolation inside the molecular monolayer and to the underlying conducting glass, as previously observed with monolayers of the donor D3 (Bonhote, P.; Gogniat, E.; Tingry, S.; Barbe, C.; Vlachopoulos, N.; Lenzmann, F.; Comte, P.; Graetzel, M.
