Breakdown of n-butane during its oxidation to acetic acid is usually thought to be associated with decomposition of 3-hydroperoxybutanone. However, experiments on oxidation of the precursor of this hydroperoxide, butanone, showed the presence of a number of products whose presence might indicate the 3-hydroperoxybutanone is converted, at least partially, without cleavage of the C-C bond. To determine the course of conversion of 3-hydroperoxybutanone the authors studied its thermal decomposition in butanone oxidized by air at 123 degree in a steel autoclave under 1. 47 MPa pressure for 35 min to 1. 8% conversion. It is shown that thermal decomposition of 3-hydroperoxybutanone in oxidized butanone at 123 degree proceeds predominently without cleavage of the C-C bond, with formation of acetoin and biacetyl.
