The range of wavelengths absorbed by a molecule; for example, absorption in the infrared band from 2.3 to 3.2 µm indicates the presence of OH and NH groups, while in the band from 3.3 to 3.5 indicates aliphatic structure. Atoms absorb only a single wavelength, producing lines, such as the sodium D line.See Spectroscopy; Resonance (2); Ultraviolet Absorber; Excited State.
