(AMD). Water from both active and inactive coal mines that has become contaminated with sulfuric acid as a result of hydrolysis of ferric sulfate, the oxidation product of pyrite. This is a factor in water and stream pollution, which can be corrected by use of appropriate ion-exchange resins.
