(1899–1978). Born in Maine, Best was educated at the University of Toronto, where he distinguished himself as a student of biochemistry. He collaborated with the late Dr. Frederick Banting in the isolation of the hormone insulin. He later became head of the insulin division of the Connaught Laboratories of the University as well as of the Banting and Best Research Institute. He also developed histaminase (an antiallergic enzyme) and the anticoagulant heparin.See Banting, Sir Frederick.
