Methane generated from animal manure by bacterial anaerobic digestion. Small-scale units have been in use for some years, and the possibilities of utilizing the tremendous quantities of manure available in the U.S. as an energy source have stimulated investigation of large-scale production. One installation utilizing a thermophilic fermentation technique at 55–60C has been operating in Florida since 1979, and another in Colorado since 1981.
