A glycopeptide antibiotic produced by Streptomyces verticillus; it functions as an antineoplastic and diagnostic agent. The molecule is exceedingly complex, but synthesis was achieved in 1982. It is a colorless to yellowish powder, soluble in water and methanol but insoluble in acetone and ether. It induces rupture of DNA strands.
