A substance that increases the effectiveness of a soap or synthetic detergent by acting as a softener and a sequestering and buffering agent. Phosphate-silicate formulations, once widely used, have been restricted for environmental reasons. They have largely been replaced by EDTA or zeolites, sometimes combined with nitrolotriacetic acid.
