Properties:

Yellow to brownish-yellow essential oil. D 0.959–0.970 (15C), refr index 1.503–1.510, saponification value 6–20. Slightly soluble in water.

Derivation:

By steam distillation of calamus, the stem or root of the sweet flag. Chief known constituents are asarone (see 2,4,5-trimethoxy-1-propenylbenzene) and eugenol.

Use:

Perfumery, flavoring agent.
