(1) Synonym for methanol, CH₃OH; (2) any compound of similar structure retaining the COH radical and in which hydrocarbon radicals may be substituted for the hydrogen originally attached to the carbon. Thus, isopropanol, (CH₃)₂CH₂O, and benzyl alcohol, C₆H₅CH₂OH, may be named dimethylcarbinol and phenylcarbinol, respectively.
