A reactive intermediate in the graft polymerization of certain synthetic polymers to cellulosic fibers. The latter are treated with sodium hydroxide and a sulfur-containing compound, and the cellulose thus activated is placed in an emulsion or solution of monomers. Polymerization at 50 C occurs with a peroxide catalyst to form the graft.See Graft Polymer.
