Properties:
Whitish powder when pure. Commercially a hydrated oxide containing 85–90% ceric oxide. Soluble in concentrated mineral acids; insoluble in water.
Derivation:
By treating a solution of a ceric salt with strong alkali. Reagent grade is prepared by adding a saturated solution of ceric ammonium nitrate to an excess of ammonium hydroxide.

Commercial, high purity, reagent.
Use:
Production of cerium salts and ceric oxide, opacifier in glasses and enamels (imparts yellow color), shielding glass.
