    (1947– ). Born in Haifa, Israel, Ciechanover won the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 2004 for his pioneering work concerning the discovery of ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation. He was awarded an M.D. from Hadassah Medical School and a doctorate in medicine in 1982 from the Technion. In 2000 he received the Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research.
