Cobaltammine

    Name:
    Cobaltammine
    Detailed information:
A coordination or complexing compound containing the group [Co(NH3)6]3+ or its derivatives in which some of the ammonia has been replaced by other groups or ions. The names hexammine, pentammine, etc. are used to indicate the number of ammonia groups present. Prepared by adding excess ammonia to a cobaltous salt, exposing to air so that oxygen is absorbed, and boiling to oxidize the cobalt. These compounds show none of the ordinary properties of cobalt. Different types of salts with various acid radicals are known. The ammonia in the ammines may be replaced, molecule for molecule, by other nitrogen compounds such as hydroxylamine or ethylene diamine, by water, by ions such as hydroxyl, chloride, nitrate, etc., or by groups such as nitro (NO2).See Coordination Compound.
