Grayish-black, metallic powder. D 6.67. Insoluble in water and hydrochloric acid; soluble in nitric acid; insoluble in hydrochloric acid.
Derivation:
By heating copper and phosphorus.
Hazard:
Dangerous, spontaneously flammable, and toxic phosphine evolved on reaction with water. May explode when mixed with potassium nitrate.
Use:
Manufacturing phosphor-bronze.
