    The seed of the cotton plant, Gossypium hirsutum. It contains about 22% crude fiber, 20% protein, 20% oil, 10% moisture, and 24% N-free extract; also contains from 1 to 2% of the toxic pigment gossypol; specially processed kernels are free of this.
    Hazard:
    Generates dangerous amounts of heat if piled or stored wet or hot. Powerful allergen; may cause asthma and other respiratory difficulties on inhalation.
     
    Use:
    Source of cottonseed oil and meal, cotton linters; source of nutritional protein after removal of gossypol by centrifugation.
