    (hydrocarbon tolerance). The maximum number of unit volumes of hydrocarbon that can be added per unit volume of active solvent to cause the first trace of gelation to occur, when the concentration of nitrocellulose in the solution is 8 g/100 mL. This may be used to evaluate the solvent power of active solvents by comparing them with a standard hydrocarbon, or to evaluate hydrocarbon solvents by comparing them with an active solvent.See Solvent; Lacquer.
