    In general, the separation or isolation of components of a mixture or a micromolecular complex. In distillation, this is done by means of a tower or column in which rising vapor and descending liquid are brought into contact (countercurrent flow). Macromolecular components (proteins and other high polymers) can be separated by a number of methods, including electrophoresis, gel filtration, chromatography, centrifugation, foam fractionation, and partition.See Reflux.
