    A permanent chemical or physicochemical change. Examples are (1) a chemical reaction that can proceed only to the right, giving a product that is stable and that cannot revert to the original constituents; most reactions are of this type; (2) a colloidal system that cannot be restored to its original form after coagulation or precipitation, for example, the hardening of egg white or milk protein by heat, the formation of butter from milk (mechanical action), and the coagulation of rubber latex by acid (chemical action).See Reversible.
