Properties:
Colorless or faintly pink crystals, sometimes moist with glacial acetic acid. Mp 175C, d 2.228 (17C). Soluble in benzene, chloroform, nitrobenzene, hot glacial acetic acid. Combustible.
Derivation:
From red lead ( Pb3O4) and glacial acetic acid in the presence of acetic anhydride.
Hazard:
Toxic material. Absorbed by skin.
Use:
Oxidizing agent in organic synthesis, laboratory reagent.
