    (1803–1873). A German chemist who founded the Annalen, a world-famous chemical journal. He was a great teacher of chemistry, training such men as Hoffmann, who did basic work on organic dyes. Liebig contributed original research in the fields of human physiology, plant life, soil chemistry, and was the discoverer of chloroform, chloral, and cyanogen compounds. He was the first to recommend addition of nutrients to soils and thus may be considered the originator of the fertilizer industry.
