Lavender-gray powder. Mp approximately 3500C, d 7.82. Insoluble in water and in all acids except a mixture of nitric acid and hydrogen fluoride.
Derivation:
By direct combination of niobium with carbon or by the reduction of niobium oxide with lampblack.
Use:
Cemented carbide tipped tools, special steels, preparation of niobium metal, coating graphite for nuclear reactors.
