(1) The piece of DNA released after restriction digestion of plasmids or genomic DNA. See “Restriction enzyme”. One can digest a plasmid and isolate one particular restriction fragment (actually a set of identical fragments). (2) Also describes the fragments detected on a genomic blot which carry the gene of interest.
