(1) The reddish corrosion product formed by electrochemical interaction between iron and atmospheric oxygen; ferric oxide (Fe₂O₃). The reaction occurs most rapidly in moist air, indicating the catalytic activity of water.(2) A reddish-yellow fungus that attacks plants, especially cereal grains; it is also called smut. It can be controlled by treatment with formaldehyde.
