One example is the discovery of the sodium sulfide polymer later known as “Thiokol.” White, the researcher, was seeking to develop an improved automotive coolant. Another is the discovery of the reinforcing effect of carbon black on rubber while technologists were using it as a black pigment to counteract the whitening effect of zinc oxide.
