An antibiotic produced by Streptomyces puniceus. Unique among antibiotics in that it is more active against acid-fast organisms than against other groups. Mycobacteria are most sensitive to viomycin, and the antibiotic is active against strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which are resistant to other antibiotics. Available commercially as sulfate.
