Two conductive metals of different potentials, in contact with an electrolyte, which generate an electric current. The original voltaic cell was composed of silver and zinc, with brine-moistened paper as electrolyte. Semisolid pastes are now used; electrodes may be lead, nickel, zinc, or cadmium.See Solar Cell.
