probe X-ray source [monochromatic Al-Kα (1486.6 eV) X-rays]. Sur-
vey scans were recorded with an X-ray source power of 33 W and
pass energy of 187.85 eV. Narrow scans of the elemental lines were
recorded at 23.5 eV pass energy, which yields an energy resolution of
0.69 eV FWHM at the Ag 3d5/2 elemental line of pure silver. Cali-
bration of the binding energy scale of the spectrometer was performed
using well-established binding energies of elemental lines of pure met-
als (monochromatic Al-Kα: Cu 2p3/2 at 932.62 eV, Au 4f7/2 at
83.96 eV).[30] Samples were prepared on pieces of silicon wafer and
mounted on the sample holder inside an anoxic glove box. A PHI
transfer vessel was used to move the sample holder into the XPS with-
out air contact. Data analysis was performed using ULVAC-PHI Multi
Pak program (version 9.6).

AES: The elemental composition of the particles was analyzed by in-
ductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES)
with an Agilent 725 ICP-OES Spectrometer (Agilent Technologies).
For ICP-AES measurement, the nanoparticles were precipitated and
dissolved in aqua regia.

Catalysic Tests: Hydrogenation reactions were carried out in an auto-
clave reactor (200 mL, Premex), equipped with a teflon liner, a me-
chanical blowing stirrer (teflon) and baffles (stainless steel) to achieve
intimate mixing between the gas and the liquid phase, a thermocouple
and a heating bath. In the anoxic glove box, 1 mL of the nanopart-
icle@IL samples was loaded together with the organic substrate
(17 mmol cinnamaldehyde dissolved in 30 mL THF) in the autoclave
reactor. After heating to the reaction temperature (80 °C), the stirring
was started (1200 rpm). During catalytic experiments, the hydrogen
pressure was kept constant at 10 bar and hydrogen was continuously
supplied to the reactor by a gas burette (500 mL, Parr). The consump-
tion of hydrogen was recorded automatically based on the pressure
drop in the gas burette. The reaction was started by hydrogen initiation
into the reactor. The reaction products were analysed by using a gas
chromatograph (GC-FID, Agilent) equipped with a J&W SCIENTIFIC
DB5 column (Agilent Technology, 30mϫ0.25mm, 0.25μm film thick-
ness). The results were used to determine conversion and selectivity.
Turn over frequencies (TOF), product selectivities (SCAOL [%]) and
CAOL yields ([%]) were calculated using the following equations
[with t (h) reaction time, n0,CAL (mol) initial amount of substrate
(CAL), nmetal/catalyst (mol) amount of metal catalyst, Xt,CAL (%) conver-
sion of CAL at time t]:
